Do you find watering your plants a joy or pain?
Comments (35)Here's what I think: If you're using a fertilizer that contains Fe (iron), it's very unlikely you have a scarcity of Fe in the soil. That doesn't mean though, that you don't have a scarcity of Fe in the PLANT. Foliar applications of Fe aren't very effective on plants with a lot of cuticular wax, like gardenias. Usually, when you have an Fe deficiency, it's because the soil/soil solution pH is so high that the iron bonds with other elements in the soil solution and precipitates (falls out of solution and becomes insoluble/unavailable). The best way to fix that isn't by adding more Fe or through foloiar applications, it's by lowering the pH - so the Fe that's already there can go back into solution. Fe is not very mobile in plants, so while foliar applications might help supply Fe to the foliage if it can be absorbed, it's not likely that it will resolve the deficiency throughout the entire organism. That's best achieved by ensuring there is dissolved Fe in the nutrient stream (sap). Your fertilizer plan is workable, but I think it's an extra step. Why not just mix up enough fertigation solution and fertigate all in one application, instead irrigating and then fertigating? If you're going to use one of the hose end siphon attachments, I think it's important that you ensure it's accurate at various pressures. When you're only trying to mix 1/4 tsp of fertilizer/gallon of water, it wouldn't take much to double or triple the solution strength, or have an inadequate amount of fertilizer going into the solution. You almost need an injector type system that can be accurately calibrated if you intend to add fertilizer to the irrigation stream. Al...See MoreWhat do you do about daylilies you don't like?
Comments (27)I bring them to work and give them to my co-workers. I do that with a lot of the extra divisions and seedling plants in the spring. This year I brought in 10 or so divisions of Siloam Doodlebug and 8 divisions of Snowy Eyes and a few of some others. I also bring in other plants, like Lady's mantle, iris, perennial geraniums and stuff. I hate composting perfectly good plants and I'm too lazy to sell them. Most of my co-workers are not die-hard gardeners like us and don't care about things like names and genetics - they're just happy to get a nice plant with neat flowers for free! I've been doing this for a few years and it's always fun to have people come back to me and rave over a plant I gave them a year or 2 ago....See MoreCat~~~what did you do about SS?
Comments (57)Phoggie, Hi! Thank you for thinking of me ;0) I am currently looking for a home. I decided I did not want to move back to the home that SS has been living in when he gets his own place (which incidentally prob wont happen soon as his whole deal fell through-you cant get a mortgage when you have filed BK within 5 yr.s). I went and got my mortgage approval and am working with a real estate agent looking at places now. It may take a little time as I want to be really careful to not get in over my head financially and have areasonable payment including taxes. I want to pay for it all by myself with no help from DH. I'm sure you understand why. I am trying to keep DH in the loop about looking at homes and such, to be fair. I am still trying my best to make it not only comfortable for me but make sure he would like it too. He just says "pick whatever you want." Well, that's my plan! Whatever!! I can tell you this, I will not accept any financial assistance from him for whatever I end up getting. I don't ever want to hear again "I'm working so hard to take care of YOU, blah, blah, blah. I have toyed with NOT getting a house here but rather buying one out of state near my son instead. But there are some steal here & I could keep it as a rental if DH did not want to stay in the winter. Thats whats up with me right now. Thank you for thinking of me :0) ~Cat...See MoreDid you ever have weird unexplained pains?
Comments (22)Different from your issue, but I do remember one time I was doubled over in terrible abdominal pain. I kept thinking it was intestinal, but it wasn't. After about an hour or so of me rolling around on the floor, it finally let up and went away. It wasn't until I saw my doctor and told him about it that he suggested it was an ovarian cyst that burst. Who knew? It's amazing we're healthy at all, given all the functions going on all the time in our bodies and how many things have to go right for us to feel well....See Morerob333 (zone 7b)
