Price check on Carrier Infinity HVAC system

Hello Everyone,
My AC system died and I have decided to replace my entire HVAC system since it is 19 years old. I am mostly hoping for a price check. I got a quote from the company who has been servicing my system for years. I have been with them for a long time and I'll probably purchase from them since I have been very happy with their service. I am in South East Michigan (near Detroit) Anyway, here is the quote

Carrier Infinity 59TN6 Furnace 80,000 btu $5105
Carrier Infinity 24ANB 3 ton $6896
$12,001 total

He said he would do a load calc prior to installation to confirm proper sizing.
Anyway, are these prices in line? Also, the 2 stage AC unit sounds great but do I really need it in Michigan?

Complete scope of work...ductwork modifications required?...new media filter cabinet?...new refrigerant lineset?....humidifier?...Infinity controller included?...any rebates available?... basically not enough info provided...

If this is a simple equipment replacement then my initial reaction is the prices are very high.

Wakko Price on repair may be on high side but not by much. I personally think it wouldn't be cost effective to repair unit. How old is system? I would not have a Payne. You would want the 803 stat for better dehumidification. BTW, this is a Honeywell stat just rebranded for Trane. the mdl number is #8321. What is mdl number of the var speed air handler? Makes a difference? What size heat strip? What about whole house air filter cabinet? New line set included? Here are a few ideas on HPs. there are three equally important components-quality HVAC, the install by dealer, and probably the most overlooked and disregarded is the ductwork system. these are my minimum specs for a new HP system. both outside and inside units should be replaced to have a properly matched system. 15 SEER, 12.5+ EER, 9 HSPF best matching VS air handler full BTUs in both cooling and heating for your rated size R-410a refrigerant(same as Puron) scroll compressor preferred electronic demand defrost preferred thermostat with "dehumidify on demand" feature staged backup heat strips new and correctly sized refrigerant lineset 10 yr warranty compressor and parts you want a thorough inspection of your ductwork system. size, overall condition, supply and return lines, insulation qualities, leak test, etc. any hot/cold spot issues in your home should be addressed. I would only use authorized dealers for the various brands that provide quotes. see mfg websites. I would look at Trane/AmStd,Rheem/Rudd,Carrier/Bryant. I would not purchase a new HP system that did not have electronic demand defrost. IMO

Thanks David.We live in Northern Lower Michigan, just above the 45th parallel. We do not have Natural Gas and Propane is our fuel source other than electric. My understanding is that we will seldom need the back up heat. The boiler set up seems like it will give us much more control over the basement climate and an endless supply of domestic hot water but it also seems like it will cost us a lot more in the long run vs. something like a Marathon Electric HWH. I also should say that your number is higher than any of the three I have gotten so far. This makes me less comfortable with the lowest number as I see many warn about cheap installs!

The price is even absurd for the Philadelphia area. Is the 5500 sq. feet the total living area? Does this include the basement? If it does what are the sizes of the first and second floors, and basement? Which system is being replaced (upstairs or downstairs)? Does this one system have two dampers? Why do the dampers have to be replaced? Is there anything wrong with them? Does the quote indicate the size of the equipment, filter, and the thermostat? Anything else included in this very high quote?

I agree with Mike. Of course scope of work and complete equipment details may make a difference but just routine install price is high. If you haven't gotten another quote, I suggest you do. Sister company Bryant has exact same system.

$400 rebate on the AC. $250 rebate on Furnace. (These are rebates from the Utility company)

Carrier runs a rebate program every spring and fall. The current one ends on May 31. The dealer has to make a decision to participate since he funds half the cost. The other half is paid by Carrier and the distributor.

I understand you have used the contractor a long time and like him. However his pricing does not seem to be competitive. I suggest you get quotes from other Carrier or Bryant dealers in the area. I find it hard to believe this is the typical price for the Detroit metro area.

Find out who will provide the labor warranty. Carrier stopped offering labor warranties a few years ago.

Find a Carrier/Bryant dealer who is participating before making your decision. Both brands' website have a dealer locator.

The dealer is providing the labor warranty and has put that in writing.
After I get a few more quotes, I will ask my dealer about rebates or anything else including general pencil sharpening.
Anyway, what should I expect to spend for a system like this?

You left off the last number on the AC model. Did you get a quote for the 24ANB7? That is a two stage model. The 24ANB6 is the single stage version.

For the 59TN6 80K furnace and 24ANB7 3 ton AC with the items you listed above I would expect to pay about $11K before any rebates in my area in NJ. I would think it would be less in where you are. I have no hard data other than what I paid for a similar system 6 years ago and quotes others have posted. Do a search on this forum to get an idea on pricing.

The furnace price is reasonable, but the AC quote seems very high. Maybe you were quoted a 4 ton instead of a 3 ton. There are big price differences in each size of the 2-stage equipment.

It is the 2 stage air conditioner. 24ANB7. The contract does say 3 ton AC.
