Please help me identify this crabapple beauty

Hello,

A friend has a beautiful crabapple tree in front of her home. I'd like to make a spot for it in our yard, but first need to identify it. Any suggestions are appreciated!

From what I've read thus far, I suspect it may be Malus Adirondack. It fits most of the criteria:

-Deep magenta/red buds

-Flowers that are mostly white, with a dark pink tint to the outer petals

-Loads and loads of blooms

-Very upright, narrow form

However, upon looking at the blossoms, they almost appear to be semi-double or double? Maybe I'm wrong, but when I compare it to photos of Adirondack online, the blooms on her tree appear to have more petals. Also, the fruit persists throughout the entire winter and into spring - you can still see a couple in the photo below with the flowers.

I dont know what it is but here is a link to a crabapple guide that should help you sort it out. The guide also mentions the Adiriondack.

Thank you. I have already reviewed this particular guide, but all I can come up with is that the tree I want appears to be a cross between Malus Adirondack and Malus Jarmin (Marilee). The latter of the two is fruitless, and the tree I'm trying to identify definitely produces fruit.

*Shaking my head* It figures that the tree I desire is an apparently uncommon variety. :)

The common line of thought on apple trees is the following: If an apple tree consistently produces fruit that is smaller than 2" in diameter, then the tree is classified as a crabapple, regardless of the sweetness/tartness of the fruit. So yes these are crabapples. I wish I could give you the cultivar names, but there are hundreds of different varieties of crabapples out there.

Your most reliable source would be the builder of that model home. Since it is new there should be no problem finding the reference number.

Crabapples "Madonna" and "Spring Snow" also have double white blooms.

Also, what color friut does the tree produce?

Your neighbor has no idea about what cultivar it is?

"Spring Snow" supposedly has single blossoms? At least, according to what I've read. Besides, the tree I'm trying to identify is definitely an upright/inverted cone variety. It's not nearly as wide or tall as most crabapples I've seen.

The tree was already in place when my friend moved into her home, so she too is unfamiliar with the cultivar. The fruit is red, approx. 1/2" and persistent. I've not seen another one like it.

When I look at the tree, it's most striking characteristics are the deep magenta buds followed by the prolific display of flowers - which definitely have a pinkish-red tint to the outer petals.

I would be convinced it's an Adirondack, except for the double blooms and persistent fruit.

Check out Red Jewel Crabapple. But i think it also has the single white flowers but very pretty persistent red fruit.

Thanks, but it's not Red Jewel either. The flowers don't match, and the tree shape is different too. I just can't figure it out!

It's possible that the fruit is really persistent because the tree is right next to a home, so I'm not really using that as a defining characteristic so much as the color of the fruit and the type/color of the blooms.

There are only so many crab apples with double blooms, and from what I've seen many of those produce little fruit. But, the photos do look like semi- or double blossoms, right?

Yes those are double blossoms. If you cant figure out what variety it is you could always have a small branch from that tree grafted to a rootstock to produce your own tree which will be identical.

Hmm. I'll have to keep it in mind if I become desperate, lol. I'm going to check with our local university too. If I can confirm the cultivar, I'll be sure to post here. Although, I keep hoping someone will come along and post with a definite, "Oh, that's XYZ cultivar!" I do realize crabapples are tricky though, due to the many hybrids and similarities.

Well, if you have no life, neither do I! Lol. Actually, there's a lot more I should be doing, but the nerd in me just can't let these things go... You're right though, Pink Perfection does look quite similar. The petals are a bit different and it's more pink than my mystery tree, but close...
