I planted 2 knock out rose bushes 2 ft from foundation, enough room?

I brought 2 double knock out roses last week and planted them 2 1/2 feet from my foundation wall. Is that enough space for them?

Also, it rained yesterday and i noticed the rose heads were drooping down because of the water from the over hang. will this be a problem when they get larger and more established?

I might re-think those bushes if I were you. Two and a half ft might be all right, but If I planted them there, I'd put them closer to 3 ft from the foundation--you need to let some air get in there, and Knock Outs can spread out quite a bit as they mature.

However, I'd worry about water from the overhang--could periodically knock over branches and blooms. On the other hand, if the plant is too protected by the overhang, it will not be able to take advantage of the rain--and rain is much better for roses than water from your hose/city system.

Don't know where you live, but here in the Midwest, we usually put up gutters--to help protect our foundations.

When it rains, blooms will sometimes get a bit waterlogged and need to be propped up or at least gently shaken to get rid of some of the excess water. That is a common problem. The issue here is whether your roses are getting far too much excess water from the overhang overflow. I guess I'd need some pics to decide for sure.

Yes, where do you live? In my z4 area KO grows only about 2 feet tall but when I was visiting in Atlanta, GA, I saw KO's growing 6 feet tall. This is why it is helpful to include your zone & state as part of your GW name.

It may well be too late to think of it, but if you want something lower-growing, some of the Polyanthas might be your answer for generosity of bloom and low stature. In our area, China Doll has been used and used and used because it matches those requirements. For a red, there's Mutterdag (Mother's Day) and Lady Reading. Salmon Pink Margo Koster, and all the rest of the Koster sports (do "Contains" KOSTER in a HMF search, or check Vintage's catalog). I'd use any of those guys before I'd try a Knockout -- Not because I'm a snob, but because Knockouts would be such horses, and because I don't want anything that mildews. In a more modern vein, if you want something truly low-growing, I'd use Kim Rupert's lovely 'Lauren' or 'International Herald Tribune' if I wanted poiple. For White, I might use Pope John Paul (or try the white China, 'Ducher.') For Yellow, gosh, how about Julia Child? For red, I'd really go back to Mother's Day. Jeri

Since you have to do something now and they are covering the entrance, you could just prune back on each side so that there is plenty of room for access up and down the steps. Then, in late winter when the ground is workable, dig them up, getting as big a rootball as possible and re-plant them at least 6 ft away from the steps. If the bush is too big and awkward to work with, cut it down about half way and then dig it up and re-plant. Water it in its new spot--slowly and deeply (flood it actually, unless the ground is rather moist already). Perhaps water it in several times in a row--and do it several times during the next week (unless it rains). Several weeks later in early spring, if you want, you can do some selective pruning--prune out any parts that are black or brown (dead)-- and perhaps shape it a bit if your fall pruning left it a bit lop-sided, but just accept that you can't do a lot shape-wise at that point. Do not panic if it is slow to get started in the spring. It will have to grow some new roots and take time to settle in. By the way, what gardening zone are you in (or what region or state)? It is sometimes easier to give specific instructions if we know. I am in Zone 6 (Kansas) and my advice is based on what I would do here in my zone. Water them very well the day before you move them. On the day dig your holes in the new spots first. Then dig them out and move them quickly to their new homes. You can use a wheel barrow or drag them on a tarp to so you only have to handle the root ball as little as possible. As Jackie said water them in very well and keep them watered, but not soggy wet, for the first week. Don't panic if there is some wilt at first, that's fairly normal, but they should perk back up within a few days to a week. Good luck and let us know how it goes when you do it!

Home Run is an excellent shrub--just as bs resistant as Knock Outs, but a bit more continuous blooming and, in my opinion, has slightly more attractive blooms, although the blooms are singles. The one thing I would warn about is that Home Run has some really sharp thorns. You might want to plant them somewhere else where there isn't a lot of traffic and get yourself 2 more Knock Outs for lining the path. However, if the path is wide enough that visitors are not likely to brush against the roses, then I guess I would put the Home Runs first on each side--since they bloom a bit more regularly. Both types will have a down period as they rest before the next blooming cycle, but Knock Outs have a longer down time. Here are my Home Runs forming a short border between my neighbor's property and mine. No one walks over there except the lawn guy. The HRs, fully grown, are about 3.5 ft tall, maybe approaching nearly 4 ft tall, in my region. Hope that helps. Kate

I'm guessing your KO will grow similar in size to the ones I saw in Atlanta....about 6 ft tall by 4ft wide.....best info will come from someone in your area.

It won't survive the RRD long enough to get to 6'. :( There is intense RRD infestation in the tri state area here. Over use of KO in gas station and fast food landscaping with no one ripping them out when they get sick has all but obliterated private rose gardens. I used to have over 600, and am down to under 20.

Please read this thread before jumping to conclusions regarding Knock Out roses and rose rosette disease (RRD). Remove knockouts to reduce risk of RRD?

We know that the mite that is the host for the disease travels on the wind, and they are more likely to land on large plants, which Knock Out can be. It is also possible that the landscaped plants were affected by the use of herbicides (glyphosate) near (or on) the plants, which results in symptoms that look similar to the effects of RRD.
