Wood front door
Comments (13)Our all oak front door is original to our house, which was built in 1918. There's a 10 ft porch with roof in front of the door. I'm in the midst of refinishing it now because we hated the color that a previous owner stained it to. Our solid oak back door is a Simpson Craftsman door. I finished it with 5 coats of spar varnish, nearly 3 yrs ago. It faces east, is not protected by any roof or screen door. It is weathering like a champ. I am adding 1-2 more coats of spar varnish this year and we have finally found a salvaged screen door which will be going up in front of it in a few weeks. Spar varnish (marine varnish) is the key for outdoors/weather...if your door is stained....See MoreGood red for front door
Comments (12)The BEST paint in the world is Old Village Paints. Sold at specialty hardware stores or upscale home interiors store. I order mine via the mail. I LOVE their red - SAlem Brick. I did my house in that red, a taupe and SW Bottle Green. I love it. Their link is http://www.old-village.com/ Every painter I have used has commented how great this paint goes on - indoor and outdoor, I have used their paints along with BM thruout my house. The coverage that Old Village gives is superior to anything I have used. It is FANTASTIC. Other colors of theirs I have used and loved are Steeple White and Rittenhouse Ivory. Just awesome......See MoreIs the Southeast side the best location for a front porch?
Comments (14)We are in SC, and our front porch faces southwest. Due to the layout of our house, it doesn't darken any of the 'public' rooms, shading the stairwell, foyer, and master bath. We call it our 'winter porch', as it gets pretty hot in the summer. We have an open deck across the back which only gets filtered morning sun, so we sit out there on hot days. We are in the woods, and have trees in all directions. The trees to the east and west serve to shade the house in the summer, but let light through in the winter when the leaves are off. Consider keeping or planting trees for this purpose- they really make a difference. Our front porch serves several purposes. It shelters the front door so you don't have to stand in the rain when unlocking the door. It is a major architectural feature. It shades the front of the house from our hot summer sun. Oh yeah- It's a great place to sit!...See MoreHow to transform front door/porch from boring to warm and welcoming?
Comments (28)I like to signal the front entry with a bright, noticeable green. It doesn't necessarily have to be the paint on the front door, either. In your case, I'd paint the front door SW Inkwell (a navy black) in a satin finish (sorry about the pic with the mums, the pumpkin, and the lantern - don't do that). Put a bright green planter to the left of the front door. I'm undecided as to whether I would center the bench under the window or move it over to the right side of the entry. Either way I'd keep it cheerful but not fussy or labored over. I would resist the urge to put a tacky, giant colorful rug down there....See MoreRelated Professionals
