Newbie needs advice: finishing oak exterior door

I've just ordered a new oak front door for my bungalow and need advice on how to finish it (it comes unfinished and I will stain it in place). I've stained and varnished small projects, such as furniture and woodwork, but this is a large scale (and expensive) venture that I don't want to screw up! The front door is south facing in a brutal climate (cold winters, hot summers--Minnesota), but it will be covered by a new metal screen door so will be relatively protected from the elements. Still, the sun can just bake the front porch area and I've had to re-do the window sills in that room several times over the last number of years, even with marine spar finish. I'll be staining the door a medium reddish color. Does one coat of stain suffice, or will two be better? Is there a preferred brand of stain? Most importantly, what type of sealer/surface coat should I use (poly, varnish, ?) and how many coats? Do I sand between coats? Thanks for any advice you can give me.
