Possible to grow climbing rose in large pot?

Hi,

I am very new to gardening and saw beautiful Joseph's Coat climbing rose at local Home Depot yesterday and on a whim decided to buy it. I hadn't thought too much of where I would keep it but now I realize I don't have anywhere in the yard to plant it (at least, anywhere that it would get sunlight. The only available space to plant it is pretty much always out of the sunlight) so I thought maybe I could get a planter at least 20 inches? Would it be alright to keep rose in such a planter at least for this year and then possibly plant it in soil next year? If it's doomed to die in a planter then I might as well return the plant.

A grocery store near here has about a dozen Joseph's Coats in pots. They've been there for a couple of years now, and they are still alive, though not as large or vigorous as they would have been in the ground. I think they also need a lot more water in the pots than they would in the ground.

The pots, however, are not just big. They're REALLY REALLY big. Maybe 3-ft tall? So, it can be done, given a large enough pot. But don't be thinkin' 5-G pot. You'd need 15-G, or more ideally, 20-G. (And ample water, and good drainage -- so, NOT a "saucer." Think more "Pot Feet.")

I know when I first started growing plants in containers the gallon vs inch size was like greek to me. A friend sent me a link to ANSI. Within the article is a chart showing the cubic inches per recognized pot size. You can take a measurement of your container L x W x H and look that up on the chart to see the "nursery" acceptable designation. This is the 2004 publication. The 2014 was a revision but I've not found that this particular chart has changed.

729zoom, Check out some pictures of large Lady Banks. She can get really, REALLY large.So you could easily site her 10 feet from the shed and train the emerging canes onto the shed. I really think for a rose that large, more than a whisky barrel's worth of room is needed.

When I first moved to this place about 10 years ago, I bought a JC and loved it. But it died in a particularly harsh Winter. I didn't care that much for roses for several years, but around five years ago I started getting into clematis, with some success but a lot of rotted roots along the way. Got more into the gardening forums and slowly got a few roses on sale because of the many beautiful pictures I've seen of roses & clems growing together. So last Summer I found a potted JC on sale at Kmart. Got 2 fantastic blooms from it before I even got it into the ground, around early October. Because it was rated hardier than the other roses I had bought, I dared to plant it in a more open area than close to the East side of the house where the z6b kinds were planted. It did have some dieback, and was a little slower starting to leaf out than the more protected ones, but the new canes. or maybe they would be called laterals, are about 6 inches now and I started fastening them at a 45 degree angle to the wires on my homemade trellis, which is a little shorter than 6 ft. Will keep at it as they grow, and even if it only makes it halfway up but blooms, I will be more than happy. There is a type 3 clem planted next to it which should get up to the top this year. And as it grows I can coax it more to the JC side. So, if you like it, go for it. Marie

OOOOPS, Karl!!! thanks so much for wonderful, wonderful suggestions and especially the winterizing issue! I completely!!! did not! see it because as I was posting my response, you had already written it...so we must have been cross-posting at the same time!!! I am making a clipping too out of it... Greenhaven, my roses are from Roses Unlimited...They are a wonderful! vendor; have you ever ordered from them? Don't let the appearance of their website put you off (there was a long ago post on how fancy, photo-filled websites were far more appealing...) but to me, a beautiful website means nothing...the health of the plant is and outstanding reputation of a nursery is (as with RU)...Customer service is also very! good... o.k. one more question, Greenhaven and Karl, what exactly does it mean bagged leaves as opposed to piled leaves...I'm a bit silly in that I can't figure out the difference. Silly me thinks bagged, does that mean grabbing a couple of leaf-filled lawn bags and placing them like a giantic wall barricade around each rose bush, lol! which I'm sure is not what is meant... I also forgot to tell you both that when I bury my pots they will be inside my rabbit-proof wired lot...If I throw in all the loose leaves into this "fenced in" enclosure, the leaves won't blow around and everything will be covered up... My only worry is canker... If there is too much rain on the leaves is there a danger of canker? I will also be using the mulch, shavings and then leaves with this lasagna effect...

Oh interesting. We've had the house for two years and I haven't noticed the flowers before, so I was thinking it wasn't a repeat bloomer. But it may just have made its way far enough out of the salmonberry this year to be seen. We cleared the area between it and the house when we moved in. Before that it would have been buried in brush for years. The previous owners didn't live here for at least 15 years, so the garden was completely overgrown. I'm sort of interested in bushwhacking my way further back now to see what else I can find. This will be the farthest out from the house that we've found anything besides natives and invasives. I'm a little worried if I clear out the salmonberry surrounding the rose the deer will eat it. I wonder if I can move it to the front yard? Edit: I've started looking through the hybrid musks. Could it be Trier? The buds seem more pink than salmon on Trier.

I have a climbing Don Juan in a 10 gal pot and I can see that it needs a way bigger pot already. I got it in Feb and it is turning into a monster. I have to water it every day and it would probably like more..

Thank you very much everyone who replied. I am more leaning towards returning this poor plant and perhaps getting a shrub rose plant instead...Would a 2 gal rose plant be better suited for container living?

I grew Blaze in a pot for about 6 years and it did fine. Since I planted it in the ground it hasn't done much of anything. Go figure?

I grew a Eden in a pot for about 3 years, then I made a mistake put it in the ground without covering the bud union. Now I have 23 rose trees in pots, they are doing great. If you're in a warmer zone, you'd need a huge pot like Jeri has mentioned. What about a rose tree? :-)

I used to have a very large Lavender Lassie in a big pot. I'm not sure how big the pot was..maybe 26 or 30". It rooted through the hole. I have a Constance Spry in a pot by a fence. It's in a dry area crowded by tree roots so I put it in a pot. It too has rooted through the hole and is a pretty big plant now. I'm finding that it's a pretty good way to get a plant established in a dry area. I don't water that Constance Spry for the most part. I think I used to water it before it had sent roots through the hole.
