Possible dead joseph's coat climbing rose?

Hi all,

I am not sure if the winter has killed it but all the branches were dark and dry and I had to prune to the bottom and I don't see any green branches? Is it dead? I even covered it for the winter.

It's now May...

Any help on reviving would be much appreciated !

It might be dead. What zone are you in? Is it a grafted plant? Did you bury the bud union deeply?

Anyway, it's too early to tell. Cut off all the obviously dead branches and wait to see if it comes back. Some of my roses take until the end of June to regrow. I don't worry about them until then. But if you do have a grafted plant, you'll need to be sure any new growth is from the graft and not from the rootstock.

Since Joseph's Coat isn't hardy in your area, you may want to consider removing it anyway and planting a hardier climber.

Thanks for the reply... so you say it isn't hardy in my area :( i'm in Montreal.

What do you mean grafted ( pardon my ignorance with gardening terms )
So I should just wait and see till June?
I can send you pictures if you want of the plant now.

What is going on is that you just planted it 6 weeks ago, and the poor thing is trying to grow roots while simultaneously supporting all of that top growth. However, it looks mainly fine. If it was mine I would cut off ONLY the canes or parts of canes that are brown and obviously completely dead. Then I would leave it alone for at least one year, so that it can grow roots and get established. Next Spring, when it stops freezing, you can prune it a bit. Jackie

A grocery store near here has about a dozen Joseph's Coats in pots. They've been there for a couple of years now, and they are still alive, though not as large or vigorous as they would have been in the ground. I think they also need a lot more water in the pots than they would in the ground. The pots, however, are not just big. They're REALLY REALLY big. Maybe 3-ft tall? So, it can be done, given a large enough pot. But don't be thinkin' 5-G pot. You'd need 15-G, or more ideally, 20-G. (And ample water, and good drainage -- so, NOT a "saucer." Think more "Pot Feet.")

Roses are sold in two ways, grafted onto a vigorous root stock and on their own roots. Most roses are grafted. A grafted rose will have a swollen knob just under the canes. This knob is the point where the rose variety is grafted onto the root stock and from where the canes grow. It's the weak point and is most subject to freezing and dying. If it dies the variety you want is dead. Any growth that comes from below the graft is unwanted root stock which is usually one of two varieties, one red and one white. These only bloom once a year and only on year old wood.

Joseph's Coat isn't even hardy in 6b where I am. Even if it is still alive it isn't worth keeping because you don't want a climber that will die back in the winter.

When I first moved to this place about 10 years ago, I bought a JC and loved it. But it died in a particularly harsh Winter.

I didn't care that much for roses for several years, but around five years ago I started getting into clematis, with some success but a lot of rotted roots along the way.

Got more into the gardening forums and slowly got a few roses on sale because of the many beautiful pictures I've seen of roses & clems growing together.

So last Summer I found a potted JC on sale at Kmart. Got 2 fantastic blooms from it before I even got it into the ground, around early October. Because it was rated hardier than the other roses I had bought, I dared to plant it in a more open area than close to the East side of the house where the z6b kinds were planted.

It did have some dieback, and was a little slower starting to leaf out than the more protected ones, but the new canes. or maybe they would be called laterals, are about 6 inches now and I started fastening them at a 45 degree angle to the wires on my homemade trellis, which is a little shorter than 6 ft. Will keep at it as they grow, and even if it only makes it halfway up but blooms, I will be more than happy. There is a type 3 clem planted next to it which should get up to the top this year. And as it grows I can coax it more to the JC side.

So, if you like it, go for it.
