ID? White rose, climbing, possibly quite old
I hiked up the hill behind my house to see what the white flowers were, and was really surprised to find white rose. Apparently someone gardened up there once upon a time. This is a large bush with flexible canes, so probably a climber? It's currently growing out through salmonberry, but I'd estimate the canes are 6' long or more. It has the most spectacular fragrance. Interestingly, the buds look pink but the roses are white. The house was built in 1902 so this could be quite old. Anyone have any idea what it is?

Comments (18)I think the "red" descriptioin is messing with me, cause it is so not red. Mine just came into bloom, and the only color to describe it (it's from a root cutting from the one in the pic above, but is in shade instead of sun) is HOT pink. I did though find one set of pics of Excelsa on the web and those were the same color as this one. So tell me, when a rose is described as red, it may still look pink? Do the Light red and Mauve red look more pink? When I think of a red rose, I think of the deep red roses you buy at a flower shop. Excelsa huh? So far it has been by far the closest I've seen. How sure can we be though? I know it's hard to id by pics alone. I just don't want to tell some one that that's what it is, and it's not. I suppose I could keep it at a Rambler Rose, most possibally Excelsa. Or I could keep as, "I don't know what it is, it's just purty." LOL I gave a few people some starts, and they were curious as to it's ID also. And I assumed since it was an old rose, it would be an easy, common ID. Thanks all!! Comments (14)...just my observations but I agree with others that it's a dead ringer for 'Zephirine Drouhin'...going from the description.... and I assume this will be from the 1950's?... when I read earlier descriptions of this rose, they all seem to agree that it blooms until checked by frost and the disease issues that we see today, don't appear to have been such a problem in earlier times.... over here it's always put down to increased pollution kept these issues at bay, but today's cleaner air allows more black spot and mildew to proliferate... that's how I understand it... ....I can imagine in Shelbyville Texas, decades ago, this rose would have still been regarded as disease resistant... ...even here, it also grows to 8 foot or so in its first year.... all sounds about right......See MoreIDs needed: collection of roses at 100+ year old house
Comments (78)Woot! A positive ID, and such a lovely one too! I look forward to it flowering all summer for many years to come. Interestingly, this is the second potential link I've found to Portland. I do wonder who the rose lover was. On to pink rose #3. This rose is about 6' tall, upright, and shows no signs of pruning. It's quite vigorous and is pushing new canes up from the ground. It's growing in the roots of a Western Red Cedar that is at least 100 years old (we've seen it in aerial photos from the 1920s, and it wasn't small then). Quite thorny, this one is a repeat bloomer that bloomed continually all summer last year and has no hips. It's growing in a different area than the majority of the roses, so it could be from a different era, although so far they all seem to be from around the same time period. The buds are a coral pink, but it blooms out to a somewhat shocking bright pink. Comments (39)WOW what a stunner of a rose! - We stumbled on your post after searching for the Lauré Davoust rose and agree with the possibility that the ID is the best match for you. Bearing in mind that if this rose is the result of a seedling it will be unique, the only one on the planet! Only a gene test from a sample would truly give you the best and most accurate ID for sure. You could also take some cuttings which would produce an exact replica of your truly wonderful find. 7 years agolast modified: 7 years agoI couldn't reach any young blooms, but I zoomed in on a younger one and it looks like it could be a pale pink. I got a shot of some slightly more open buds and they're definitely pink. And I got a shot of the stem and thorns if that helps. The canes are really long from what I can see, perhaps more in the 8'-12' range
It has a salmonberry next to it, but it's growing up through what looks like a giant lace head hydrangea, so I think we can safely assume this area was gardened at some point.

7 years agolast modified: 7 years agoI was asked to put all my roses together, so I've added this white one to my main "discovered roses" post over here, although no one has weighed in over there yet. I got some photos of a bloom just opening yesterday - it blooms blush pink fading to white - and discovered that the canes are more like 25' long.
It's throwing out canes in every direction, and the canes that run along the ground are rooting in and sending up new plants. I dug one up and popped it in a pot yesterday. I'm hoping to put it near the house where I can enjoy the fragrance, if I can find room for it (and control it!) I'm waiting to find out what it is, or at least get some advice from you experts on how to handle such a vigorous rose before I make my mind up.

Thanks! I managed to catch a bloom as it was opening today and it's a pale blush pink. So pretty!
