Ordered Fruit Trees, What would you do next?
Comments (2)How you prepare your soil depends on what kind of soil you have. If you have heavy clay, I'd dig deep, much deeper than the plant will go in a coulple years and loosen the soil. I wouldn't amend, though I would plant the trees high (clay soils tend to drain poorly and also can pool holding water and drowning roots). Personally I do little in the way of preparation this time of year, I do compost and pile my beds high with leaves in the fall. I add leaf mould (rotted leaves from the fall before) and mulch around the new planting (2-3 inches deep and away from the stem) just after planting. Digging in the wet-cold soil (too much) only serves to damage the structure of soil and leave it clumping and hard. Wait til the ground warms a bit, if you ordered from a good place they will not ship until it is appropriate for you to plant anyway. (for me, also zone 6, that will likely be around the end of April/beginning of May). Anything that comes in before that will get 'heeled in' in one of my vegetable raised beds (any good soft soil will do) or in a pinch I'll pot them up in 2-3 gal containers and place in a protected part of the yard. If you start digging too close to young trees you risk damaging roots (ignore the myth that the roots of a tree are a mirror of its top, imagine instead the roots being more like the tree's shadow, only extending about 1-2 feet below the surface (there are exceptions of course)). If you plant a grape vine at the base of a cherry, it will quickly overgrow and smother the cherry. Also, sunlight is necessary for the ripening of fruit and a grape in a cherry would only serve to increase the chances and severity of disease in both plants. ~Chills...See MorePlanting trees next to mobile home
Comments (7)cacwoody, check your local library for a book called The Sunset Western Garden Book, and look through the list of trees and the comments they have about what would be appropriate for your Bakersfield location. You need only a small tree or patio sized tree with deep growing, well-behaved roots. A small tree will give you sufficient shade for your home and yet not be a problem for nearby concrete or pipes. A large tree will end up being an expensive problem and could cause you problems with your neighbors. What if it were to fall on your home? Get the smallest tree that will do the job. A "small tree" is defined as 30'-35' which is likely too large for your lot. A "patio" tree would be something like 20'-25' and would still provide the shade you need. For the size of your yard and height of your home, one or two large shrubs limbed up as trees, or a "patio" sized tree may do just fine and be less likely to cause problems and expense. Getting a tree trimmed costs money. Choose wisely....See MoreThis bush? tree? planted right up against house?

Comments (48)Bklyn, it looks like you are using the same lights as I. Nice. Are those L.E.D light bulbs? Socal very nice. I love that reflection. It looks very bright in there. NO wasted light for sure. Kvetch, you are not kidding there. I can't believe how LONG we have had this cold, snow, and below average temps, and it's not even winter yet. I keep looking at the ten day forecasters outlook and now I see 30's . no 40's. I think I am going to be sick. The ones on the porch I have to water often if I use a fan. If I don't use a fan, it can take a few weeks before they need watering, but they only stay moist thank God. The one in my all season porch, I have to water those every few days because it's much warmer in there, much more sunlight, and I also use fans. LOl. I hear you about window hogging..lol Right now my tree and orchids are competing for the best spot. Jenny, very nice. One of these days I am going to get an Australian lime. Does it produce lots of flowers that smell nice? I would go after the fragrance more than anything.. Laura, didn't it seem like yesterday when we were growing them all outside? Boy do I miss the days when all you had to do was use a hose..((( Yes, all the twist and turns one has to take to get around each tree can be such a pain. Very nice looking too.I hear you got a couple of scale? That's easy to get rid of once and for good. Let me know if you need a suggestion.)...See Moreilovemytrees
