We put a bag out, and it was collected, but nobody else In the neighborhood did, rather disappointing that more people didn't!

Did you get a notice that they were picking up bags? I didn't get a notice at my place, but BF (different city) did get notice so I put a big bag out there and it did get picked up but later than the usual mail time. I only saw one other bag out there.

I've gotten into the habit of delivering a box of canned and dry goods to one of our post offices.

I had forgotten about it until I was driving into town yesterday morning when I saw several mailboxes with bags sitting next to them. Later in the day I ran into a friend who is a retired postal worker. He said he helped the local post office sort the collected food items, and told me the amount they collected, which I don't remember but it sounded impressively large.

They usually do quite well here on their food drives. Had my bag out by 7:30 AM and an hour later it was picked up. We have volunteers driving the neighborhoods for the pick-ups since the postal vehicles couldn't handle it. There were also drop-off bins in the lobbies of our POs for anyone who somehow got missed.

Our bags were picked up. I did as I usually will do and shopped for it (canned goods) - the things in my cupboards more along the lines of ingredients for meals I would be making, not the types of things I would picture someone happy to see at a food bank ;) I bought practical things for households with kids, spaghettios, soups, canned fruit.

Our carrier came at his normal late afternoon time (our mail is delivered anytime from 3:30 to 5 PM) but with a little station wagon following him, taking the bags. My mothers community gets an actual bag to fill, we don't. Hers came with a note indicating if her food was not picked up on Saturday, to put it out again and it would be collected tomorrow, Monday. Or that it could be dropped off at any postal office.

Is this a regional or nationwide thing? I've never heard of this and don't ever recall getting notices in my mail.

My bag was picked up, but there are lots of construction people in my neighborhood right now as several houses are being remodeled, so I can't swear that my bag was taken by a post office employee.

Our carrier finally put a donation bag and notice in the mailbox Saturday? I knew from FB that the day was Saturday and put a bag out which was collected. Only one other neighbor did. It's a shame each house can't at least put 1 can out!

joanie, National. Some areas do a better job about letting people know than others. Very little notice in my own town the last two years.

I bet it isn't the carriers' favorite day with the extra work, and I cannot say I really blame them. It isn't a big deal in the big scheme of things, but I was tired last night, and seeing the bags still there at 9pm meant one more thing had to be added to the to-do list. I hate when companies say they are going to do something, then don't follow through. The local PO didn't appear to have an on-site collection area, so I will drive to nearby cities to see if they have one. The sun came out this morning (although I really wish it was raining again instead!) and the first nest of bluebirds fledged and flew. So I am smiling again.

I quit putting bags out, our carrier never picked them up. Just donate to the food bank now.
