Our postal service is 5 days a week. I always thought it odd that it was 6 day service in the U.S.

I think it is a good idea - when you are broke you cut back.

I can adjust my mailings & RX order to accomodate. The postal service has been raising rates for years - this is a good move.

We only get mail Mon - Fri. I think the only time they extend that (parcels only) is during the Christmas season. I know Canada Post does pickups from the mail outlets 7 days a week, but they don't deliver it to homes 7 days a week. To me, it's just normal. Actually, if Canada Post cut back to 4 days a week, it wouldn't affect me.

Makes sense to me. I always thought Sat. was unnecessary.

I heard that they may cut out a day mid week. Their prices are sky high....where is all the money going!

I hope they don't plan another big expensive trip for the bigwigs this year.

They stopped door-to-door delivery many years ago for us. They have grouped all the mailboxes into one spot and we have to go and pick up our mail. If there's anything other than envelopes they put a notice in your mail slot with a key and there's one or two larger mailbox slots where they deposit your parcels (or if it's gigantic, you get a notice to go down to a post office to pick it up).

Even rural door-to-door delivery has gone by the way of the dinosaurs!

Wonder if the mail carriers think its such a wonderful idea. I know I would be upset to know I was losing a day of work/pay..esp if others thought it was a wonderful way to save money.

Nope we ALL need to do our part to start using the postal system more. Its our fault that they are losing money. We save our money and time by using the Internet to pay those bills. We call and get off of mailing lists because we don't want junk in our homes and instead of sending birthday cards/ letters we send off an email. MY goodness we are evening emailing invitations to things like baby showers and weddings.
Its no wonder they are losing money and are going to have to cut their employees hours. and YES I am just as guilty.

We still get mail to our boxes out in front on Saturdays but the post offices themselves are closed on Saturdays.

Littlebit, the jobs are what we are forgetting here too. I have a friend whose Hubby is a mailman and his hours have been reduced.

I've always wondered how that works actually. Does each letter carrier work a 6 day work week then?

The carriers around here have a 5 day work week.
They all have Sunday off, and have a different second-day-off during the week.

Cutting one day of delivery will just mean that they will all have the weekend off. With retirements/attrition, it will result in a payroll savings.

I remember when we had mail delivered twice a day!

Of course using the computer has decreased the amount of postal mail, but I don't feel at all guilty about it. It is just another change in lifestyle.

I don't drive a gas-guzzler or live in a McMansion, so no, no guilt here.

I have rural mail delivered 5 days a week (when there is any) to a box at the end of the lane. Quite a bit of it is ... well, you know that four-letter-word for mail that we complain about so much.

Last year, when my mailbox got hammered by municipal snowplough and during repairs I went to the office about 3 mi. away to pick up, the lady said that I could rent a box at the P.O. for about $125.00 a year ... or pay her something over $20.00 per month to pick it up at the wicket!!

That message sent my wallet into a blue funk for about two days!

When they were making noises last year in New Brunswick about how risky it was for the mail carriers, stopping and starting and weaving in and out along the highway, I figured that we could see what was to be coming next.

What a waste of gas - 50 people driving to the P.O. daily ... instead of one car driving down the road ... even if it does stop and start about 50 times.

I wouldn't miss Saturday delivery. I still think it's a baegain. For 42 cents, you can pay a bill or send a letter to anyone, anywhere in this whole country. What else can you get for under a half dollar? A small coffee costs 75 cents around here.

Apparently Tuesday is the lowest volume day..that's why it's the one being looked at.

Fortunately, my state still has rural mail delivery. Otherwise, my mother wouldn't get hers. If they go to 5 days...and what the PO wants, they usually get....if I worked for the PO, I'd want Sat. off. The work Mon, off Tues, work W,Th,Fri is a bit odd. With Sat off, the employees could plan family time, maybe a 2nd job. I suppose we, the consumer, are partly to blame for PO being in dire straits....the service has declined in many areas, poor management (the last cost increase put no money in most of the PO employees check).....that's one reason I use email a lot. But I also use snail mail. Sadly, it's another sign of the times, and any 'savings' will be wasted.

We have rural delivery--Bobby puts our mail in the box or if we have a package, he gets out of his truck and puts it on the porch where it is safe from the elements. I'd sure hate for him to lose his job, or to have his hours cut back.
However, if the PO needs to cut back delivery to stay solvent, we wouldn't miss the sixth day of delivery.

I think 5 days a week is enough. I wouldn't miss Saturday's mail. I'd get it on Monday.

Wow we get mail 6 days a week.Mom-Sat.I wish we had better services.I was just telling Jenni how bad our services are.One thing I was having trouble with our cell phones.I was told to mail old ones back and if they do not receive them in 14 days they would charge us 245.00 each.Got a text saying they have not received them yet.I have 4 more days.I am such a dummie I did not get proof I mailed them.They sent me a paid sticker for the postage.So I just placed the paid sticker over the address and took them to the post office like it said.Walked out not thinking I do not have proof I did mail them back.Now I am worry.Pray they get them.245.00 each I could buy new phones.

So many misconceptions. First, the assumptions that Saturday will be cut... nope. Tuesday is the day they'll cut. Thinking it'll reduce staff? Nope. Some possible temp/part-time maybe but nothing significant. Some electrical/heating cost from the buildings being shut down. Think that they'll lose hours? Hardly. They're under contract, though it should be re-negotiated by someone with some guts. Our not using is causing them to have financial trouble??? That's totally laughable. The mismanagement, overpayment of employees, letting them work 3 hrs and day and get paid for 8+ OT... and they still have trouble with deliveries? LOL One of the local towns has the post office paychecks being sent FedEx... because they kept LOSING their own paychecks! I know a number of people who work at the, excuse me, are employed by the post office. I know a lot of the stuff that goes on there.

Want to restore financial soundness? Cut back on unneeded management. Make all of them work the full 8 hrs instead of having someone else punch them out later, go take a nap and come back and other scams. Pay them what they're worth and no more. Quit giving incentives to do less, and give incentives to do more. Quit giving carriers a vehicle and then paying them mileage on their own vehicles. These are all normal and sound business practices for but when you're government subsidized you don't have fiscal accountability. Actually, having the post offices open 7 days a week would be a better option. Make it more convenient to use, and have people wait on customers instead of leaning on the counter in back watching.

I do as much as I can by phone or internet and will do more and more as I can. We talk about all the bailouts from airlines to auto companies but forget about the ongoing bailout called the post office.

We get very little mail on Tuesdays, I would rather have the Tuesday delivery stopped. You know, they never ask me!! LOL

The problem I see with Tuesdays is what happens when Monday is a holiday? That is really backing things up, no inhouse sorting or work done on Monday, no service of Tuesday so they play clean up on Wednesday and delivery on Thursdays? That's bad for retailers, usually their sale circulars run Wednesday or maybe Thrsday thru the weekend.

The credit card companies will fight not having a delivery on Saturday. They time their 'junk mail' to hit your house on the weekend because that is when most people review card options and make their changes.

There is too much fat in the post office, they need to go on a diet.
