Stamp Out Hunger w/ Postal Service Today

I meant to post this earlier and I do apologize for the last minutess of this.

Today, May 8th, the US Postal Service will take any canned, boxed or bagged non-perishable food items that you leave by your mailbox and deliver them to a local food bank. It couldn't get any easier.

So, please look in your pantry or cellar and see what you might be able to part with. Anything near the expiration or sell by date? Too many of something or a "what was I thinking" item? Do you have a few minutes to run to the store this morning? And I bet if you dropped it off at the post office they would take it there too if you missed your letter carrier.

We post here with our wonderful recipes and photos of our meals, so lets help those that may go without. Yup, I am doing the guilt thing here!

Oh, and if you have any pet foods, many food banks take those too.

Thanks for posting this Peppi. My bag is hanging on the mailbox as I speak. I contribute every year. Looking up and down the block I guess I'm the only one. I wish more people would help. It really is easy and a great way to clean out the pantry and help needy folks all at the same time.

No matter what, Tanya, in the hosta market, today--it's a risk when you buy one. Don't worry about it--if it's HVX you will know in a few years, for pretty sure. Just make sure not to cut scapes with the same knife or scissors you just cut another with. And, if you dig and divide, make sure you also clean the shovel and or knife (after and between digs) with a fury, with Dawn dish detergent and a bleach solution. With the nematodes--in my opinion, it's a worse problem. But--what are we going to do--give up our passion? Nope, we'll just have to 'deal with it'!!! Enjoy what you've done!!! I've gone through the hysteria of nematodes and the frustration of HVX--and I think I'm beginning to mellow. The nematodes I found the other day--didn't get 'nuked' this time, like the leaf I showed above (my first discovery on a newly purchased 'Sugar and Cream'). In fact, I'm so cool about it--it's still in that card-board box up on the deck! I feel sorry for it!! But--not for the 'nems'!!! I hate that they are such a problem--and my graphic is from the previous experiences, but I just posted it for fun this time!! I'm not nearly as 'freaked' as before--but still miffed at the seller for selling it--because it was a problem she saw--and felt she had to conceal, whether she understood what it was or not! That, to me, shows a lack of integrity--which I value very much in anyone, whether they are selling me something or just being a friend--be honest, sincere, kindly forthright and patient with me--cause we all are 'a work in progress' on some level! :o/ Did I mention I just can't abide someone who 'flatters' which translates to be someone being very ingenuous--hoping to impress me and with an ulterior motive--that I always wonder about!!! And, I just don't understand the desire to hurt another person, to put them down or make them feel idiotic--what is with that in a person to feed off that kind of hurtful mindset?? Oh well--now you know more about me than you ever wanted to know--right? LOL

I never ship USPS...they are unreliable, and take too long. I use DHL or FedEX....DHL is cheaper and faster. For $4-5, their ground service is a MAXIMUM of 3 days (except at Christmas, when it can stretch to 4). Their tracking system is the best, and they have real, human customer service people who will find the location of a package that has not been delivered and even refund charges if a package isn't delivered in time...things the USPS does not do. Try calling the USPS with a problem...and the best you get, if they answer the phone, is a bored voice telling you 'I dunno, nothing I can do". It costs nothing to open an account with FedEx or DHL, and you get free pre-printed waybills. The USPS, IMO, is the worst shipper.

There are boxes in a number of our grocery stores asking for donations, and at a number of churches (including both that I attend regularly) and firehalls. The grocery managers are pleased to have me buy food at retail to contribute to them, as that purchase is for some goods that I would not have made otherwise, but I don't do that: the food would be of my choice plus that would cost me a retail dollar. Occasionally during the year, especially near Christmas, some grocers encourage us to ask the cashiers to add some to our bill to give to a local social service agency, to pay $2.57 to buy a meal for a poor person. I don't do that, for while that type of gift allows the service agency to buy the goods that they need the most and to get it at wholesale, say at 80 cents or slightly more ... ... the agency that gets the tax credit is the grocery. Why should I make a gift to them? When I visit the Food Bank or that social service agency or others and write them a cheque, they can buy what they really need the most and get it at wholesale price, same as above ... ... but they give me a receipt for the donation, which results in my out-of-pocket expense being in the neighbourhoood of 50 - 60 cents, instead of having paid a dollar to have bought my choice of goods at retail cost of a dollar. This Frugal Fella likes them apples better. I hope that all of you women have a really wonderful Mother's Day ... mine died 67 years ago (and step-mom, with whom I wasn't close, 23 years ago). And my ex-, with whom I hadn't lived for 38 years, left this section of life nearly five years ago. So my flowers on Mother's Day are white. ole joyful

Postage is postage, use them wherever you need postage. I've never had an issue. AFAIC we've been getting ripped off for a long time. Prepaying postage meant we bought the delivery of a 1st class letter and if you didn't use it for a few years shouldn't mean there's an expiration on it. It's about time they did the "forever" thing, which was done to sell more stamps anyway since people got sick of postal increases and started buying smaller amounts of stamps. I've been using the online and bank for bill-paying for years now and it's great. My bank will also send a check if they can't do electronic transfer for me so they pay the postage, check fee and envelope, rather than me. Very convenient and it's certainly a savings on postage using online. 10-15 payments per month means nearly $5-$7.50 per month just in postage, plus there's a small cost in envelope and I often tape the envelope shut for extra security, again a minimal cost but a cost nonetheless. Plus the gas and vehicle costs to take them to the mailbox or post office since I don't like putting them in the house mailbox unless I can keep an eye on it for safety. There has been too many times where kids and even not-so-kids have messed with the mail and I don't always get out and about every day. And for me it's not worth keeping 22¢ stamps around so when I need additional postage I sacrifice the cost of another stamp. In any case, I've quit sending Christmas cards, and use fax, email and instant messenger for a lot of communication so I use very few stamps these days. Even mail-order purchases are usually credit card or PayPal so my mail system use is very little and I'm very pleased about that. I got totally disgusted with the Post Office when they couldn't get a newspaper to me in less than 10-15 days so I don't want to give them any more business than necessary.

Well I just went through my pantry and found quite a few cans that are approaching sell-by date in the next several months, which I know I'll never use. Nice to put them to good use rather than throwing them out after the fact like I do so often.

There have been public service announcements on the radio as well as a post card in the mail, so I went through my stash and found a good amount to set out.

The businesses in town are doing a food drive for the month of May, so there are all kinds of places to contribute and they often have contests and prizes for contributing, which makes it fun. The food is divided between a number of agencies in town who distribute food.

FOAS, yeah it's easy to miss. I'm sure if you didn't see a blipit on the news or missed the little postcard (amongst all of the other junkmail) it would be easy to not even realize it happens or remember what day what with everyone's busy life. Like Rachelellen says many people contribute in many other ways during the year, myself included. I never claimed to be the male Mother Theresa, but it's nice to help out even in small ways when you can. Being a decent human being is it's own reward.

LOL I went through the mail that I just brought in and sure enough there's the postcard.

(Bills and junk mail, that's all the mailman seems to bring anymore. Hardly seems worth the effort to walk the 30 feet to check the mail until I see the box is overflowing every four or five days...)

My mail carrier already picked up the two bags. On this short street, no one else put anything out. I cleaned out some cans with close "use by" dates, then went to the store yesterday and picked up a couple of BOGOF items and put those in the bag too.

This service makes it very easy to do!

Thanks Peppi. The mail lady is late - I guess with the additional task of picking up food - so I had time to put my contribution out.

What's sad is that it helped me cull out good but excessive foods. I need a daily reminder that I am a thoughtless pig and frivolously have way too much.
