How long can I realistically expect apliances to last?
Comments (6)This gives me an idea, for a new insurance option -- a blanket clause that clicks in once you show you have had more than one repair in three years or two in seven years. An incentive to stay with the same insurer for many years. As a rule, it is not a good $ deal to buy extended warrantees on individual devices. OTOH, grouped coverage (over seven appliances costing min.$700 each) is a winner both for the client and the insurance company. Then both can wisely manage the risks associated with life expectancy (of appliances). -david...See MoreHow long should a Liebherr refrigerator last?
Comments (9)makes me laugh since you point out how the thinking behind the question may be flawed. Allow me to broaden the question. I have seen web sites say that 7 or 8 cubic feet of fridge volume are plenty for a couple. This is the volume in a 24" fridge-freezer. Predicting life expectancy works best when you have a large fleet of the same things. Pooled results corresponds somewhat to the predicted results. Single devices vary a lot; there is much less correlation. So yes I agree there is something inane about thinking of a single device's future life span. Any fully integrated fridge has to get rid of condensation water by evaporating it and blowing it back into the room. (H20 condenses out of the fridge air after you let room air into it. An eternal cycle.) Is your house air dry? If so, your fridge is under less stress, permanently. This one little factor determines the mileage because X thousand days of working ten times as hard as another fridge will shorten its life expectancy. So putting a dehumidifier behind the fridge will be good for it and also good for your kitchen micro-climate if you like drier air. Fridges fight against humidity after they do the easier work of creating cold by moving heat across a few inches of space. Just for the intellectual exercise of comparing oranges to oranges, the Danish Vestfrost and the Turkish Blomberg / Arçelik are I believe the closest comparisons, and these two firms named are real factory owner-operators. In Europe just as here you will find appliances made by a factory for another company that puts its name on it. So tongue in cheek, Liebherrs will last as long as any other Danish or Turkish fridge built with the same components. HTH -david...See MoreHow long will a Luxe Pedic memory foam mattress last?

Comments (13)According to the report in the Consumers Reports Magazine the average lifespan of a water heater is 12yrs. Code requires that whenever a water heater is installed over a floor or flooring materials that can be damaged by water the water heater must have an approved pan with a 3/4" drain line terminated into an approved "indirect waste receptor". The TPRV must also have a full bore line drain line which will drain by gravity flow to an approved indirect waste receptor. (The TPRV may not terminate into the pan). The preferred method of installing a water heater is to place it near an outside wall on the ground floor and both the Pan drain & TPRV drain lines are extended through the outside wall and terminate on the ground outside in a conspicuous place. The end of the drain lines must point downwards and there can be no fittings or threads on the end of the line. (The drains may not be concealed behind shrubbery.) Solid, liquid or gasseous fired water heaters may not be installed in a bathroom, bedroom or any room which opens directly into a bathroom or bedroom. In a situation where a water heater is installed in a basement and the house main drain exits the structure above the basement floor where a gravity flow floor drain cannot be achieved we remove the TPRV valve. For electric water heaters the opening is plugged and for gas water heaters we install a WATT's 210 gas cutoff valve. A Pressure relief valve is then installed at any convenient location on the first floor and it is discharged through the wall outdoors. When a water heater is installed in an attic space there is a long, long list of additional requirements...See More- 11 years ago
