Sealing Fuel Line in Plastic Tank

I have various small engine tools with stiff or broken fuel lines. I was attempting to replace them on a weed whacker and realized that I don't understand how they keep gas from leaking where they slip thru the holes in the plastic tanks. I got several sizes of the yellow tubing. Sometimes they fit snug thru the hole, but other times not so much. My current problem is on a YardMan trimmer. I had thought that perhaps the barbed end of the tank filter was supposed to be pulled thru the hole and that the expansion of the tubing from the barb would do the sealing. I actually think that it would work, but I was just realizing that this configuration of the filter would not reach to the bottom (although fairly near) when the unit was in normal ground use. I normally expect any filter to dangle free to reach the appropriate bottom for the current tool configuration. How do you all solve these issues?
