Advice on newly transplanted Elm tree

Brendan Compton

two weeks ago I planted two 3" caliper cedar elms in addition to 8 other smaller trees, elms redbuds and fruit trees. I'm in southern kansas with pretty heavy clay soil. I think I planted correctly, these were container grown. I've been watering between once and twice a week soaking the area pretty well and then allowing it to dry somewhat before watering again. All of the trees have little to mild transplant shock, except one. One of the larger cedar elms looked ok until about 4 days ago. It started looking a bit brown, and has gotten worse everyday since. There are still some greenish leaves on it, but it's looking pretty bad. The other larger elm is the next closest tree and has been treated the same, and looks great. Did I get a sick tree possibly? If the leaves die, at what point do I extract and replace? Is there possibility for recovery from total loss of the foliage? I guess my ultimate question is, how do I know when it's a lost cause?
