Cearbhaill's unattractive facade house
Comments (24)Cearbhaill, when you threw this house out as an example on the foundation planting thread, I thought it was very helpful in promoting a more tangible discussion. It is helpful for my own thought process to have it more fully fleshed out in this thread. I also really like modest homes. I particularly like the bed lay-out yaarkvark proposed. I think it works either with or without the small tree between the windows. The bed could be simplified by using mulch instead of a ground cover. It might be worth while to invest in good edging to make mowing easier. I'm no expert but have a few photos from my time scouring the web that you might find interesting. Both of them use a rock bed right around the house and very simple plantings placed away from the house [[(https://www.houzz.com/photos/asian-contemporary-contemporary-landscape-milwaukee-phvw-vp~329038) [Contemporary Landscape design[(https://www.houzz.com/photos/contemporary-landscaping-ideas-phbr1-bp~t_728~s_2103) by Milwaukee Landscape Designer Ginkgo Leaf Studio [[(https://www.houzz.com/photos/lafayette-residence-modern-exterior-austin-phvw-vp~303206) [Modern Exterior design[(https://www.houzz.com/photos/modern-exterior-home-ideas-phbr1-bp~t_736~s_2105) by Austin General Contractor Texas Construction Company From your description it sounds like the motivation for improvement is to help the house sell down the road, but when the time comes to sell, the location will offer much of the appeal. For what it's worth, I would do whatever makes your mom and you the most happy (thinking especially about your time commitment) and not feel obligated to make upgrades....See MoreCould you help me pick a little yellow.
Comments (10)Only two obtusas and you want something different? Oh the shame..... You might want to consider some of the C. Pisifera cultivars as well - some good yellows on tough plants. I particularly like "Vintage Gold" - very tough, holds color here in full sun without burning, takes pruning well and stays colorful all winter - more yellow than gold, too which suits my taste. I have to weigh in here for J. Mother Lode, too - one of my favorite plants. Be aware that this is a groundcover juniper so a great companion to any conifers - not more than 2 inches tall but spreads to 3 feet or more. Here it is with pinus strobus "Blue Shag" I used a flash on this photo to capture that sulphur yellow - very distinctive! It goes bronzy purple in the winter which only adds to its appeal.......See MoreBest Conifer Near Pond
Comments (9)A potential issue is wet, clay soil that may not drain well. I've read that I should perform a drainage test, but haven't done one yet. ===>>> i would suggest you confirm the situation.. prior to limiting yourself to swamp trees ... are you planting directly in the pond.. or a nearby bog ... or are you making a presumption.. that it is somewhat boggy around a pond???? nor have you provided much information about the sight blocking you need done ... nothing wrong with the suggestions made so far ... though a couple are deciduous .... here in MI ... how about a picture .... ??? cant say we have had an ice fishing aficionado around before.. lol ... welcome to the GW conifer forum ... ken in adrian MI .. the real SE MI ... lol ... ps: what if any other trees are near the pond.. it might give us an indication as to how wet it is ... and.. is this a man made pond??? ... perhaps capped in clay.. is the surrounding soil clay. for sure????...See MoreMy most favorite nursery
Comments (4)Thanks for the tip. I'm not far from there. Might be a nice Sunday destination! I also like Hart's Greenhouse in Canterbury, CT. Not a lot of unusual things, but everything looks great and their service is fantastic. Last year I searched high and low for some bottlebrush buckeye. No one in my area carried it. The folks at Hart's offered to order it for me this spring. I now have three in my yard off to a great start....See MoreLove Trees
