Comments (16)I get my leaves from a neighborhood that is 4+ miles from my house where they bag leaves. I jam my pickup truck very full, including putting the cleanest bags inside the cab. Evidently the people who are supposed to pick up yard waste aren't very reliable, as one place where I was taking their bagged leaves off the curb the guy yelled "Thank you" out of the house. I saw another guy loading a trailer with bags of leaves. I thought at first it was another leaf stealer, but he was wandering around the yard such that it was clear he lived there. We eyed each other, finally I took some leaves from the house next to his. He asked when I was done and he took the rest, to the dump for alleged composting. I have been to that dump, it is shared by my town and his city, it is full of plastic bags and pots and all sorts of crap, I can't imagine where/how it gets composted. Anyway, I tried to convince him to take the leaves to my house instead of the dump (I live closer to him than the dump) but he said he had to pick up another person's leaves and he had some trash to throw out. I did get him to give me the pile of flower pots he was taking to the dump. Anyway, take other people's leaves if you can. Comments (26)Lee - Up to a point I incline to agree with your antipathy to exotic plants in a Japanese garden. Perhaps it amounts to feeling uneasy with anything that looks somehow out of place because few things of that shape grow in the wild here? For instance, I feel a bit uneasy if I see Phormium Tenax or Pampas grass. I'd probably feel even more uneasy with a Monkey Puzzle tree, especially since somebody who'd seen them growing in their native habitat in S. America said they looked out of place even there. On the other hand, a restrained use of bamboo doesn't (to me) give that feeling. That brings me to what I'd call exotic artifacts. I wonder for instance, how a sleeve fence made from cedar lath compares with one made from bamboo? Here in N. America does the one made with cedar lath look more at home in its surroundings? I lean towards using the cedar lath. Coming back to the Bear artifact, I've got some more pictures of it (of them actually - it's a mother Bear & her cub). The carving is rooted in the ground - the owners told me that it used to be a big tree in their garden, & when it got too big, they had the top removed, leaving an 8ft high stump - and a young fellow then carved the bears from it with a chain saw. They said he did it in no time. When I consider those stone foxes with a red bibs round their necks that you see in some Japanese garden settings, it makes me think of the Bears as their western equivalent (though the red bibs don't suit!). Another artifact that I saw illustrated a year or two ago - I think it was in this forum - was a wooden post or tablet, carved in the style of Native Indian work, that somebody had positioned in his garden. He may have referred to it as a Stele, but I'm not sure. (It certainly wasn't what you'd call a Totem pole), It was in just the right place & it looked entirely at home - it was just as effective as a stone artifact like a lantern. Comments (9)I don't know what to say in terms of advice, but we just finished our floors. So many people rec engl chestnut to me. We ended up not choosing it though because Minwax must have just changed the formulas. From one can to the next, they were totally dif colors... One rich dark brown, the other very red in tone... I almost wondered if the lable was wrong. I did read that 2 coats will not soak in right and can be sticky. This certainly was true on our cabinet. It took forever to dry with 2 coats. I had to get mineral spirits to get some off. You may want to test before plunging ahead with 2 coats....See MoreBad influences, the whole lot of you!
Comments (98)Holly-Kay, I was pretty sure I remembered a pretty tight limitation on pets/animals. I couldn't find the covenants or restrictions online, but someone posted a quote limiting animals to "customary household pets." There seems to be a presumption that dogs and cats fit the description but fish, snakes, lizards -- doesn't say where the line is drawn. And ten there is a clause "except as allowed by [the regulating authority]." Well there's a loophole they could run a chicken coup through - at least a small one. Maybe I'll make some inquiries and see if I can get them to allow a small number of chickens -- though I'm pretty sure roosters wont be allowed on what are mostly 1/4 acre lots. Not sure I'd want them either. But to stay on topic -- will definitely be another reason to wear my pinafore! :)...See More
