Purplish/red spots on the canes of my double Knockouts.
Comments (6)I wouldn't do anything now. If they turn into areas of dead bark by pruning time, it is a canker fungus. Cankers are, or become, pretty large (1" or more) with concentric color zoning. Normally we prune to a budeye at least 1" below these. If smaller, it could be a lesion of blackspot or something similar. These often develop on green canes in the fall. Apparently they are not directly harmful, but release spores in spring. This may be of no concern on KO, as the leaves are resistant. Also green canes may go spotty for a while as they change color in the maturing process. I normally notice this in spring/summer, though. Usually, I completely ignore my roses from shutdown in late November until pruning time in late March. It spares some anxiety and fuss. I don't know that any harm has resulted from this policy....See MoreIs Romantic dark reddish or purplish?
Comments (5)Some say 'Rebecca' is red but the one I saw in bloom inside at Donahue's looked maroon to me. Maybe it is red in the sun. Gravety Beauty, a texensis, pruning group three, is the best red for me. Gravety Beauty 2nd year, 2009 'Madame Julia de Correvon' appears wine colored (maroonish) to me. This photo is a little dark. Rouge Cardinal appears a velvety maroon though can look more red if the sun hits it just right. Rouge Cardinal 2008...See MorePurplish-Red Hydrangea.... WOW!! What and Where Can I Get It?
Comments (4)Purple is hard color to obtain with hydrangeas. It is a color that you get in a narrow pH band between acidic and alkaline soil. It helps if your shrub resists turning blue. To get the same results as the one in that garden, your soil needs to have the soil pH and grow the same shrub. You can ask the owner for the name of that hydrangea and also ask for cuttings; and -if the person knows- get the soil pH level there. Then determine what your soil pH is and make it more acidic with aluminum sulfate or garden Sulphur; or use garden lime to make your soil more alkaline. Then periodically measure your soil pH to monitor the soil pH as it gets closer and closer to the goal....See MoreDeep Purplish Red Suggestions
Comments (16)Diane and Kate, thank you for your input and suggestions. My Munstead Wood bushes are doing fine despite the poor start they had by residing in a garage for a month during the Spring, and then being planted about a month ago. I contemplated Munstead Wood in the bed too, and probably should for consistency, as the bed behind and in front of this new bed already have Munstead Wood bushes. Kate, I do not know what the breaking point is for roses, the mid 90's, through the low 100's, which many places in the country will experience next week, versus 108-111 here next week; and it is soooo dry. I think roses can be a lot tougher than we think; especially relative to heat. Oklahoma was a rose I grew about 15 years ago, unfortunately I just have very little recollection regarding performance other than I believe it had gorgeous blooms, and along with Mr. Lincoln became huge, which would be a problem for the space. I really like Gypsy Boy!! Lynn...See MoreNHBabs z4b-5a NH
