Purplish-Red Hydrangea.... WOW!! What and Where Can I Get It?

Tonight we drove by a house about 25 miles north of home and saw this absolutely beautiful purplish-red hydrangea. I'd NEVER seen one like that, and I certainly would like to get one.

This wasn't lavender-purple. This was more in the line of some shade of magenta that leaned more toward purple. The flower itself was the round-type as in Nikko Blue.

Purple is hard color to obtain with hydrangeas. It is a color that you get in a narrow pH band between acidic and alkaline soil. It helps if your shrub resists turning blue. To get the same results as the one in that garden, your soil needs to have the soil pH and grow the same shrub. You can ask the owner for the name of that hydrangea and also ask for cuttings; and -if the person knows- get the soil pH level there. Then determine what your soil pH is and make it more acidic with aluminum sulfate or garden Sulphur; or use garden lime to make your soil more alkaline. Then periodically measure your soil pH to monitor the soil pH as it gets closer and closer to the goal.

My Blackberries and Cream looked as you described. But I can not speak for what the soil may have been like, as I just bought it this year.

The suggestion of Pine Knot is a very good one. If you can, you should go down for their open house festival as it is a great show. Only a short trip from your location. Its in Virginia just north of NC border but you have to get there from the NC side. My nicest double (a lavendar pink) and my best 2 yellows came from there on one of my trips down. My best black (they are really a smoky overlay very dark purple) with gorgeous dark new foliage and my best white double were from seed ordered from Elizabethtown hellebores several years back. There is a Tissue Culture black available (got one of them from Pine Knot 2 years ago) but I don't think its quite as good as some of my others.

My husband was in michigan this week and that was one of the flights he thought about taking on thursday night. He flies a lot and it just hit close to home. Clarence is not far from where we live. We are a little more out in the country. Big sigh of relief. When the news came on at 10pm they announced at the end of the broadcast that a plane had crashed by the airport, but they didn't know anything yet. By the time the 11pm news came on, it was not until after the weather that their news crews made it to the neighborhood and they announced it was a commercial plane. WIVB broadcast without commercial break until I went to bed at 2am. When my husband called to say he was alright i was so grateful. (wipes tears and sniffles) Fran, Could i have the blanket flower, please? BTW, DS#3 watered my keyboard once, its still a little iffy. We set it in from of the blower on the woodstove for a week. Just FYI those of you sowing in the keys LOL! Thank all of you for the prayers. Families here are esp. close knit and things like this are difficult for anyone. Praying for your FIL, too Nichol. Morning all! Fran, I put in a bit more postage than what it was for me to mail my package to you. I don't think that I'll get back what I sent because we have a lot of veggie growers here, BUT if by chanace you dont have enough postage I'd be happy to send more if you need it to get my package back to me. With what you get from MI Bulb, you will need to grow in a pot for a season before planting in the ground in early fall. There is a reasonable chance that you will need to protect them from deer both when they are small and when they grow. Based on my experience with MI Bulbs close to 40 years ago, they may or may not survive, not due to your care, but due to the quality of the plant material this company supplies. Before buying plants it is useful to check the reputation of the nursery on Garden Watchdog. Here's the link for Michigan Bulb with more negatives than positives. Ditto that on Blackberries & Cream. Large deep magenta heads up to 1' across. It's new for 2012 and has been sold as a gift plant. It's a genetically improved version of Firelight that leans toward these colors. Also, it can bloom on new stems from the crown so that always helps. The stems are thick and upright. I think my wife took a pic so I'll have to get that one off of her phone.

Others like the Merritt's series, Mathilda Gutges, and Glowing Embers have been known to show these colors.

My sister in law has a Pia Pink Elf and it goes those colors in her soil where everything else goes blue. Its gorgeous. Picked me up some yesterday at a local nursery.
