How do you get rid of elm tree seedlings in your beds?

They pop up everywhere in my yard and the closest tree I've seen is 1/2 mile away. I don't know why I have so many seedlings. The bad thing is that by the time they are noticeable, they are 6 or more inches tall and impossible to pull out of the ground. Cutting them off only makes them resprout. Today I cut off a bunch and dribbled Poison ivy killer on the cut.
