How can I tell if my Kopper King lived through the winter?

I know from past experience that hardy hibiscus don't start growing until later in the season, but the Kopper King I planted last fall looks dead-dead (and it's next to a Chicago Peace rose that clearly didn't make it through this past super-cold winter). If there is a hope, I want to leave it alone. Otherwise, I want to pull the poor stump and replace it while there's still time for something else to get started before it gets hot. It's dead to the soil surface for sure. Any way to tell, other than waiting until June?
