There are so many replies to my topic since I last posted that I don`t really know how to handle all of them. I spoke with her today and tried to get a feel of what she liked to grow. I am still trying to put all of this together to see if she would be interested in trying it. I haven`t asked yet. I have a feeling that maybe I should. One poster did say ( I am generalizing here ) that I should find out if she would be interested in trying something or if maybe I should just leave it alone. I took NO offense to your comments and it did make me look at all of this from a different angle. I appreciate your insight! :) Another poster said something about growing flowers. Lisa has a warm heart for just the little things in life that makes one smile. I don`t mind at all, for ANY suggestions that can help one forget ones` troubles in a time of hardship. I realize that tonight, I haven`t addressed each and every response that this post has generated. Just tired here and life over the last month, has been very trying for me.This post isn`t about me. It is for Lisa. To all of you posters who are trying to help, all of your comments to my topic, warm my heart! To EVERYONE who has made a reply to my subject, it makes me feel good to know that there are GOOD people in the world trying to help others! You folks don`t know how much this means to me. P.S., I wanted to elaborate with a comment or two on everyones thoughts and suggestions tonight. I really did. It was low forties today. It's just a crappy winter. When I lived upstate in the Upper Catskills some of the local folk told me that to determine how bad winter would be I should look at squirrels. If squirrels had huge fat, fat fluffy tails then likely winter would be really cold--the squirrels wrap that tail around them to stay warm, so I thought this made sense. Right now, my local squirrels have skinny little boas, nothing seriously fat or fluffy. Winter is strange, for now I'm sticking with perennials, biennials, and hardy annuals. I'll hold off on the tender stuff until the very end of February. T

It _should_ survive just fine through a Georgia winter. But you can give yourself so insurance by propogation thru layering. Just take a few low, long twigs, bury them in the middle, wait a few weeks, and they should have rooted enough that you can cut them from the plant and pot them on your windowsill. I really wouldn't worry, though. Lemon thyme is hardy to zone 5b without protection.

I don't think he literally meant it was freezing! Call me nuts but I run our dehumidifier in the basement almost all year long. I find the extra heat put out by it is enough to temper the air to a comfortable level. In the summer the basement will stay in the mid 60's with no AC down there but of course we need to run the dehumidifer in the summer. With it running the temp will hover in the upper 60's and its very comfortable. If I were to try to dehumidify the basement using our AC it would be way too cold to be comfortable. In the winter we heat the basement with duct work from our furnace. Again, with heat from the furnace I can keep the basement in the mid 60's which is not too bad, but we also have a whole house humidifier which we really need for the portion of the house above the basement. The extra moisture from the humidifier will condense on our basement glass block windows (and I can imagine it would do the same behind the studwalls too on the concrete walls) to counter this I run the dehumidifer in the basement during the winter. Besides keeping the humidity to a reasonable level it also adds a little heat and will keep it in the upper 60's. You may be able to tap into existing ductwork for added heat and add returns as well. Adding insulation will help too if it isn't already there.
