I always love your pictures, or your father's. I have ever done this but I will be interested in how it turns out for you. I also would start with just one.

About 15 years ago my brothers and I had all of my father's home movies transferred to VHS for Christmas. We had it done locally because we were reluctant to mail them for fear they might get lost. I guess now it's time for the next step and have them transferred to DVD.

I should give Costco a try. At least now I have extra VHS tapes in reserve in case of a mishap.

I didn't realize my dad took any videos. I've found only two reels so far; the rest of them were taken by my husband's father (1930's and 40's) and my DH and I in the 70's and 80's.

Also, I just remembered I have some reel-to-reel audio tapes I'd like to get converted to CDs. One of them was recorded during my labor and delivery when my son was born. (Don't worry--no screaming. LOL) He was born in my doctor's birthing room with my DH delivering and my daughters (ages 5 and 3) present. I heard the tape only once, back then, and was surprised at how thin and breathy my voice sounded. I guess I could blame the 28-hour labor.

I just saw your post, MaireCate. I think it must have been sheer laziness that stopped me from doing the same film-to-VHS conversion years ago.

Sometimes old film stock gets brittle. The big stores' processing is highly automated, someone not particularly knowledgeable loads the film on the machine and then may walk away. It might even be processed at something like a fast forward speed, a higher than normal film speed, which could lead to a greater risk of breakage. Yeah, film breaks can always be spliced, and missing a few frames in a sequence wouldn't be noticed.

If capturing the films without damage is very important to you, I would pay extra to have them processed more manually (by a local shop). You'll probably not find anything suitable in a small town. Keep in mind, even a local shop could have one of the uber-automated machines, you may want to check around and ask first.

Do you have a favorite camera store? That could be a good starting point.

No camera stores around here, unfortunately. Good point about fragile film, thanks. Sam's is sounding less appealing all the time.

I've been looking at some online options. A few will handle sound film (!), and one of them says they restore films for NASA and Turner Classic Movies. Maybe I'll start there.

I did it and it was a lot less expensive than I thought it would be. Well worth it. I ordered 7 or 8 DVDs for family.

I used a Groupon coupon and had a lot done, they came out fantastic. They send you the mailing container and you pack it and wait. I was very happy with them.
