Converting movie film to DVD . . . done it?

I have loads of old (1930's to 1970's) 16mm and 8mm movie film that I want to convert to DVDs. It ain't gonna be cheap! But I don't want to choose a service strictly on price; I want one that will do a quality job.

Some of the film has sound, too, but my understanding is I'll have to sacrifice the sound because the only way to convert that kind of film is to actually project it and video the results. Any idea if that's true?

If you've done the conversion, which service did you use? I thought I might start with Sam's Club---give them a few reels and see how they do.

I've converted VHS home movies to DVD, but this is another ballgame.

Thanks!

Here's my cousin Barbara (left) and me. One of the reels is just us. :-)
