Converting 8mm film to DVD -- how to?

Just today came into possession of several reels of 8mm family movies from 1956. Would like to preserve via conversion to DVD. Seeking how to or where to go for conversion service. Site search found nothing or maybe I did it wrong. Any advice or reference appreciated.

. I transferred lots of old 8mm to video tape . . . had the choice of that OR dvd; at the time I chose the tape. I edited the 8mm stuff myself ahead of time to get the washouts / blank etc stuff out; as the place I took it to charged by time. No sense in paying for reproducing wasted film ya know. They essentially projected it onto a screen and video taped it . . . could easily have been done to DVD instead. Well worth the time, VERY well worth it . . . to myself AND the rest of my family . . . but edit the raw 8 mm stuff ahead of time if it already hasn't been done . . . I was quite please with the results / quality of the whole thing . . . Bob

I organize mine by genre so if I feel like action I don't have to remember the title of all the actions films I have and search alphabetically. Genre is so much eaiser because it puts all the same type movies in one place. Of course for those actors that I am in love with like Dolph Lungren, Vin Diesel they have their own section or the what I call the eye candy section. The tv section just has all the tv shows together and then the crime shows together, scifi shows etc. As for whether or not something would be considered drama or action etc. I make that call. I put it in the section I most relate the movie with.

Do you have a way to play the film. I was reading about conserving old home movies in a scrapbooking magazine, and one of the ways suggested was to play the film and record it using a video camera. You could also narrate during the filming of it so you would have a soundtrack. They suggested having a good screen and setting up the camera on a tripod. I can take very good video with my digital camera - upload it to my computer, then burn it onto a DVD quite easily.

I recently had 2000 feet of super 8 converted to DVD. I'm outside Phoenix, Arizona, and there are plenty of places willing to do this work. However, prices ranged from thirty-three cents per foot down to eight cents per foot.

Pays to shop around a bit.

Thanks rrcrossing. I'm going for uncompressed format direct to HD for best quality I can get. I'll do my own editing once preservation is accomplished. I've seen price differentials all over the place depending upon total package of service desired so I'm sensitive to your warning.
