new to hoyas - i love em! sory and a few questions...
Comments (12)Hey Canttype! LOL! great name! Well, about the MG potting mix I use, I have used it for years with great success. The plans indoors are the ones I have to adjust watering alittle but not that much really. My hoyas, I let em really dry out between waterings. The gardern in me is very wary of overwatering, so I tend to err on the side of too dry/ underwatering. Fortunatly, hoyas seem to like that. IF some how a plant gets to wet and stays wet for more than a few days, ill set it in the sun to "dry out". I havnt had any problems with overwatering, but then again, im anal like that and pay very close attention to almost everything about the plants I have, both indoors and out. =o) Thanks for posting that site!! (yours?) I had wondered about that very thing, being that white or pink colored leaves generally do not produce more energy than they use (from lack of chlorophyl correct?) resulting in a net loss of energy for the entire plant. The almost completely white leave itself did come off on its own though. it was just old and finally died off. I think I too will try your experiment and remove white/ pink leaves from the young one. The one i repotted into MG potting mix has to be very young. It looks liek the small ones on your blog. Although it did have a nice growth spurt last winter for a nice 6" long new branch. I guess well see. I will get some pics of it and post them later today or tomrrow. Thanks again for all the help and well wishes! NPG...See MoreHoya linearis is a weird looking hoya
Comments (7)Hi Denise, Been meaning to get back to you -- too busy ;>) Hi QF, Funny you should ask how we grew it & about moisture, mentioning semi-Hydro. When I explained how I was growing it, a friend laughingly called it growing on the beach: in a small glass bowl/jar lined w/ pumice into which I set the small pot w/ a single cutting, w/ a wick extending from its pot into the bed of pumice. I watered to overflow several times a week: it kept it moist MOST of the time. I lost it after I time, may have accidentally let it dry out & I'd only had a small piece of it anyway. I guess FOR ME, this one was a bit more high maintenance than I managed well....See MoreHoya Pubicalyx in need of critical care.
Comments (4)Beautiful story, terypaul! I also grow hoyas because of a childhood memory and my mom growing one, a hoya carnosa in our case. I'm afraid I have bad news, but there will be very good news to follow. If there was no piece of stem attached to that leaf, then it has no chance of developing into a real plant, meaning a stem will not grow from that leaf. Roots can grow endlessly, but that's it - unless there were at least a few cells of meristem attached. This is biology limitations, nothing to do with your care. The good news is that you have access to 100% the same genetic material in the form of your sisters' plants! It's not just a descendant of your mom's pubicalyx - it is THE plant, with exactly the same features and character and genes. So, if your sisters' plants are healthy and large enough, I would encourage you to ask one or both of them for a cutting or a few. For best results, you / they will need to choose a stem growth that is not too tender and young, but not too old and woody either. Last year's growth or growth from earlier this spring works really well. The stem can end in very young growth, as long as it has at least a pair or two of mature leaves lower. Take a couple of stem cuttings if their plants allow - that way your plant will look bushier and fuller faster. Some people root them in water, I prefer to stick them straight into the mix they'll be growing in, or at least do not keep them in water too long - pot them when you see roots forming and just starting to grow. It's great that you have siblings - you guys can all be backups for each other and restore your plants if something were to happen to them in the future. Best of luck!...See MoreWhy do some hoya lovers get rid of plants to "make room for new hoyas"
