How do I get rid of this plague of compost flies?
Comments (43)Just a quick update... First off, thanks again to everyone who posted here, your advice was very welcome. I had surprising difficulty finding some proper soil/compost/stuff/whatever for the house plants. All the local garden centres had sold out, and I still haven't got any. However, I cut back on the watering quite drastically, and now only water when the plants look like they need it. The plants look as fine as they ever did, my chilli plants are all flowering, and the flies have basically gone. We still get the odd one or two, but nothing that would make me think twice. We don't see them around the plants any more, which makes me think that the few we see are either tough ones that haven't had the decency to die since we dried out there homes, or ones that have come from elsewhere. I still intend to repot as and when I can get some soil, but it's a lot less urgent now. Thanks again....See MoreHow do I get rid of Sweet Bubbies/Sweet Bush
Comments (15)I think I agree with John - and my one calycanthus is too little to have flowered yet, so I don't have that to wish for, yet - but it will be almost impossible to keep weeds, including new calycanthus, from sprouting. I have had relatively good luck with laying down cardboard or 4-6 sheets of newspaper, and mulching over that 4-6 in. of shredded wood mulch. BUT, it wasn't much of a hill, and I planted shrubs or established plants in it, not seeds. Can you use the above ideas for winter-sowing and bottom-less boxes to start seeds for the initial spreading of the "wildflowers", and then transplant individual plantlets from the 'bunches', come spring? As John said, you will have job security - no-one else would want it! And, you do, I know have to show willing to follow her desires, and and have something to show for your efforts come the spring. You would almost have to use a Bobcat to even make a token clearing out of the hill, and it will make an awful mess! I would think doing it by hand would take a couple of weeks..., and also make a mess, half of which would probably wash down the hill into the lake, and get the HOA mad at them, even if you put up silt fences.... Opting for the best of bad choices, if it were me, I would try for the "spotty" smaller swathes of flowers, and not for the massive sweep that the client may have had in her mind's eye.... If for no other reason, that it ain't gonna happen, unless you go for all-out chemical warfare, and mess up the lake and do major damage to YOUR sensibilities! Not to mention what it might do to your license, if you used the heavy guns near water, and it came out.... I think the herbicide for near water works, just not quite as well or as quickly as Round-Up. Anyway, good luck, and let us know what you are able to persuade your client into....See MoreWhat is it and how do I get rid of it?
Comments (8)grass guy, it is invasive because it just keeps multiplying!! I took your advice. Here it is: http://s430.photobucket.com/albums/qq26/DesertDance/?action=view&current=EvilGrass2.jpg http://s430.photobucket.com/albums/qq26/DesertDance/?action=view&current=EvilGrass3.jpg It is taking up space that I would like to use for a plant that gives back! Like a rose, a citrus. So How do I get it out? I'm a lady with arthritis. Is there something I can Kill it with? Or, do you grass lovers want to come over and dig? Thanks!...See MoreWhy do my Hoyas grow slow?
Comments (13)StoneTreeHouse hope I didn't scare you about skylights.. they really are beautiful and give your home a freedom and freshness. its just my house has too many Lmbo! it's actually funny because Idon't think the cooling/heating problems associated with them are well known.. it's like a dirty secret. You know like anything else u take the good with the bad, I was just reading the post and I realized skylights are perfect for plant lovers! One of the long ones is in the bathroom, and because of the light coupled with the humidity of bathrooms; plants thrive there....but notice the water, stain next to a source of electricity, scary...See Moreaurorawa
