2015 Rose Wish List
Comments (9)I went back to work part time so I could finish the garden out the way I really want to. I'll be getting the better part of my roses from K&M over the next couple of months (4 roses every two weeks until it is to cold to ship). All the roses I get this fall will be potted into 3 gal pots for easy storage this winter when things get really cold. When you read this, you will see I'll be VERY busy next spring. From K&M---3 Louise Estes, 3 Gemini's, 4 Moonstones, 4 Mavrik's, 4 Marlon's Day's, 2 Let Freedom Ring, 2 Elizabeth Taylor, 2 Affirm's, 2 Hot Cocoa's, 2, 3 or 4 David Austins that he will be selling this fall, 1 Shawn Sease, 1 Cooper, 1 First Choice. Big order from Edmunds---For my garden, 4 Hannah Gorden, 4 Sheila's Perfume, 2 Day Breaker's, 2 Royal Amethyst. For the office garden where I work, 2 Remember Me, 1 Chicago Peace, 1 Big Purple, 1 Electron, 1 Mister Lincoln. For the rose garden at the church where I attend (almost wiped out this past winter), 2 Remember Me, 1 Peace, 1 Chicago Peace, 1 Big Purple, 1 Mister Lincoln, 1 Electron. I'll be making a trip to Roses Unlimited this coming spring and will be picking up 3 OGR's (HP's), soft pink, lavender/purple, white. 1 Summer Snow, 1 Tiki and what ever else happens to jump into my car. WOW!!! I'm glad I went back to work....See MorePickering not taking orders in 2015, now where?
Comments (11)Bare roots: Palatine for sure. Regan Nurseries has perhaps the largest selection of bare roots - mostly modern varieties, mostly grafted. Witherspoon is another resource, less selection but I'm often surprised to discover they have hard to find varieties. David Austin is pricey, but good quality and they sell several non-DA roses. I'd avoid Edmunds because of their habit of shipping too late, which is too bad because they have nice selection and their roses are reasonable quality if you could just get them in the ground a few weeks earlier. Own roots, I highly recommend High Country Roses and Northland Rosarium for their specialization of cold hardy roses and good sized healthy plants. Many nurseries that sell own root plants offer only bands and with our short growing season that can be a gamble. I have had some good luck with bands of very hardy roses, especially from Heirloom. They have a great selection and under the new owner ship they're offering many varieties in larger size. Locally, I like Roseland in Acushnet, MA and Unacanoonuc in Goffstown, NH. Maybe try Corliss Brothers in Ipswich, MA....See MoreCritique Varieties please for 2015
Comments (54)UPDATE: Again thanks everyone for all the great advice as this has turned into a really nice thread, and I had started the original post. Have all the tomatoes starting in trays and starting to germinate, and the winning varieties taken from the advice given here are: Brandywine Pink Kelogg's Breakfast Box Car Willie Brandywine Red Rose Giant Belgium Porterhouse Hybrid Cherokee Purple Orange Wellington and for cherry tomatoes: Black Cherry Sun Gold As I said before once they are in the garden and producing, I will add some more updates along with pictures during the season! Thanks again everyone and as you can see I took advice from the forum and used some of your suggestions thanks to fusion_power , PupillaCharites(FL 9a), fireduck(10a), seysonn(8a WA/HZ 1), foose4string(z7 MD), seysonn(8a WA/HZ 1), and everyone else!! Now I can't wait till the plants are actually in the garden and starting to grow. Last year I put some epsom salts, bone meal, and some sugar in each hole with the plant, then sprayed blooms with some booster and got some amazing results. I will still buy a couple plants from the local nursery Whiteman's just a stone's throw from my house-probably like Rutger's and Early Girl. Still a little chilly here in N. Indiana (overnight in the 20's) so will have to be patient. Usually have the garden in by mid-May....See MoreNext Year's Order - Regan or Local?
Comments (4)Kim, I know Green Arrow and go out there two or three times a year. I bought Sexy Rexy, Chihuly, Passionate Kisses, and probably more from them, and they're doing splendidly. I don't know why I didn't think of them. I'm sure they have online pre-ordering just like the place down the street. Beth, I know what you mean about Regan's variety. They do seem to have almost everything. Seil, you make sense as always. Perhaps if I'd thought about it for five more minutes I would have figured it out myself ... but I didn't. Actually, I'll probably end up going out to Otto's in Ventura County -- they have acres and acres amid the orange groves, and it's a beautiful drive from here. It just means deferred gratification. So difficult....See Morebayarea_girl_z10a_ca
