Questions about burying electrical power lines

Hello.
We have some property with about 7 cabins on it (an old homestead/guest ranch) that we just use for family. It is located in a grove of trees and each year we typically find our electrical lines taken out by fallen cotton wood trees. We're considering burying the electrical line but aren't sure where to start. We have public power to one post and a breaker box and then from there it breaks out to other posts and from those posts out to the various cabins. What I'd like to know is 1) would it make sense to just connect all 7 cabins from the breaker box or would it be better to run (bury) the lines to about 4 cabins and extend to a near cabin from there? 2) what gage (type) of wire would we need to buy to run this kind of electrical cable? We currently have overhead cable (don't know the size/gage offhand but it has guide wire intertwined with it) 3) how deep would we need to bury the wire before we have to consider conduit? Or do we need to consider conduit at all? 4) Is this just a really bad idea??? I would really appreciate any/all input about this. Due to the cost and rural location we would probably end up doing the work ourselves. All helpful opinions are appreciated. Thank you!
