Picea omorika 'Pendula Bruns' vs. Picea omorika 'Kuck'
Comments (2)Picea omorika 'Pendula Bruns' is generally considered one of the most attractive/coveted conifers in a collection. It grows upright, 12-18" a year and the branches weep downward strongly. Another key trait is that often specimens form odd angles here and there so that the tree has 'kinks' and bends in it as it grows skyward. It has the silver, blue and green colors Serbian spruce are loved for as well. I don't have any information about Kuck's weeping. -Will...See MoreSold as Picea omorika 'Pendula Bruns'
Comments (6)The appearance (and quality) of nursery stock varies tremendously from grower to grower, from my experience in the trade. Conifers in particular were more likely to vary, due, as Ken remarks, to heavy fertilizer doses, and also to field pruning - or lack thereof. Weepers showed this effect more than others - you let them push out a 2 or 3 foot leader, they look a bit sparse - but they get sold as a larger grade. That is just the business, as a retailer I had to know my growers and their field practices to get the quality of stock I wanted to offer my customers. And we're not gonna get into whether anybody really paid attention if it was really a 'Bruns', a 'Pendula', or a 'Pendula Bruns'... brian...See MorePicea omorika 'Bruns' or 'Pendula Bruns'?
Comments (24)Bluespruce, As I told you, I received my 'Pendula' from the late Kas Koemans who was a famous Dutch conifernurseryman for about 30 years. He cultivated this 'Pendula' together with the 'Pendula Bruns' from the beginning on when all the other weeping forms were not in sight yet. For all those years he took scionswood from his own stockplants and that's why I'm so sure that I have the true one. I hope I answered your question now. If you are interested in some scionswood, please let me know and I send you some in the beginning of next year ;0)...See MorePicea omorika 'Pendula' vs. Picea omorika 'Gotelli weeping'
Comments (16)Thanks guys! As I recall the Pendula was very much rootbound and overgrown for the container size when I bought it. It was definitely the oddball of the group which is why I bought it and originally referred to it as the ‘abominable snowman’. It has been fun watching the leader form and grow this year (may still be growing). Your trees, layout, and clean look serve as great inspiration cb!...See More- 9 years ago
