Sold as Picea omorika 'Pendula Bruns'
Comments (6)The appearance (and quality) of nursery stock varies tremendously from grower to grower, from my experience in the trade. Conifers in particular were more likely to vary, due, as Ken remarks, to heavy fertilizer doses, and also to field pruning - or lack thereof. Weepers showed this effect more than others - you let them push out a 2 or 3 foot leader, they look a bit sparse - but they get sold as a larger grade. That is just the business, as a retailer I had to know my growers and their field practices to get the quality of stock I wanted to offer my customers. And we're not gonna get into whether anybody really paid attention if it was really a 'Bruns', a 'Pendula', or a 'Pendula Bruns'... brian...See MoreDusk Photos with an Exceptional Seedling
Comments (7)You gotta be kidding me. I have seen the "same" tree but much older at Rich Eyre's nursery and, his tree looks no different from mine. I'll have to go look at it. Thanks Clement. Edwin, you are so right! This seedling is green and it is slightly-glacous. The glaucous is noticable. It is a nice green color at any rate. I have another seedling I like a lot and evidently I confused the two in my mind. ...These photos I shot this morning as the sun was finally strong. Comments (20)Hi, Edwin, this link can help you with the question where the name 'heldreichii' comes from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bosnian_pine especially this part: The species was first described as Pinus heldreichii by the Swiss botanist K. Hermann Christ in honor of Theodor von Heldreich in 1863 from specimens collected on Mount Olympus, and then described a second time as P. leucodermis in 1864; the author of the second description (the Austrian botanist F. Antoine who found it on Orjen above the Bay of Kotor) being unaware of the slightly earlier publication by Christ....See MoreHelp me design a conifer garden!
Comments (27)When deer attack (Ive lost about 7-8 trees in 4 years, there is a deer crossing sign in front of my house- a month ago a nice buck got nailed by a car, ended up next to the sign and within 24 hours someone had cut off the antlers), I generally let things play out, just as in nature. In 15 years (or less) they may look totally normal (especially with a little help). The majority of my trees have character when I buy them (various reasons, but mostly Im a cheaparse) - just as a tree that survives a "brutal" deer attack will (Ken's "the stranger the better club?"). Do not underestimate Ma Nature, she will general surprise you in a positive way. Im not as concerned about having "perfect" or "perfectly symmetrical", etc tree as I am about growing a large and healthy specimen. I understand if you dont feel this way, just saying the trees may come thru this fine in the long run. Im looking forward to this "tri trunk" Vanderwolf Pyramidal Pine(was 6') that got snapped to the ground by a deer two years ago. How about some pics of the damage?...See Moreken_adrian Adrian MI cold Z5
