I love this plant! I know I've shown pictures of this plant in bloom before, but it is probably my favorite houseplant. My mother-in-law showed me her Columnea three years ago and I fell in love. She had a couple of clippings from her plant rooted, so she gave them to me. I promptly killed them. She promised me new clippings that spring. During that winter, she passed away. On the day she was buried, my father-in-law gave me four new clippings. I brought them home and rooted them. My cats ate them down to just a couple of leaves not once, but twice, but two years later, this gorgeous plant is flowering almost nonstop. This plant really kickstarted my love for gesneriads.

Higher temps for sure. I see no drain holes in your hanging pot - if true - that's a big problem for more than 1 reason. Cuttings of plants close to circling the drain seldom root - it's a lack of stored energy reserves thing, but when you do wish to root a healthy plant, let the cuttings callus for a few days and stick the cuttings in a highly aerated medium you can keep damp - not wet/soggy, and site them in bright light but not direct sun until they strike. What it's like to have a good hair day for a S.A. succulent bulb and find way into the misfit onion collection here. Any cosmologist would be proud of the up do style on (IMO) better stakes ( an update on a prior pic) Two shoots have growth that stretches to 35 feet from end to end Bowiea volubilis is ready for the town. Some of the other items that are called Misfit onions in the collection include Ornithogalum caudatum It use to have very very long growth w that just got in the way A fast wack and little more fatter it becomes. AKA The AKA "False Sea Onion is faster at pup/ baby making than anything else though. apx 180-200 of them over the past five years some are tossed in pots and mixed in with other sun loving suxs ( Euphorbia cuttings mostly most have been tossed as PIGs it's kind of a bummer that there not zone hardy A sweet fragrant flowering spike fills the late winter air inside. Host: Fast forward 35 or so years for that little one & you should have something that looks like this. You might not get yours to develop the split personality though. A little thirsty today while getting it's peeling back as I want the top to be self supporting Schizobasis intrica soon to come into flower Not always but can sometimes flower tiny little stars from it's tips twice with in a 12 month cycle

Thanks Crenda! Your massive agaves and jades by the waterfront make me jealous! So beautiful :) I have one pot of 'Campfire' too, I almost threw it out last year (for space) but it was such a bountiful grower and easy plant I decided to keep it. I find the care of platyphylla and campfire are very similar. I'm in part year cold climate, so in winter they are indoors in Southern windows, if too many inches away from window they will stretch, so as close to the glass as I can put them they've been happy. Winter watering is infrequent, 2 or 3 weeks, it depends on the soil medium. (Soil, quick draining with generous amount of grit or perlite....some turface..very little peat if used) In spring when night temps are warm enough over 50F, plants go outside, and begin slow sun acclimation, I put up an umbrella to filter the midday sun and prevent sunburn. Spring/Summer watering is mostly by outdoor rain, but during this drought I am watering when top inch or so is dry. If it's super hot temperature I don't water succulents, I wait until evening or first thing in the morning. I really don't baby these, but ignore them some. Also, if they want water, I've seen them send out roots and then I know I'm a little late and I should water them. I use Foliage Pro (9-3-6) in spring/summer when it's me watering them and not the rain. Lastly, if it should rain on and off and the leaves of platyphylla start to go yellow, I move it to a spot that it can dry out, like under a table or indoors.
