sink decisions morphing. super single vs. stages 45 (1 faucet? 2?)

I have a super single silgranit already. My plan was to reuse it and have the fabricator do a drainboard. Drainboard pricing is $700 and fabricator, while willing, isn't enthusiastic. Dh is beginning to balk at carving a drainboard in leathered granite and then re-leathering the drainboard area. It does seem problematic and a fabricator's leathering probably won't match the quarry leathering.

Starting to think I might repurpose sink in the mudroom (wow, it's light years better than our cracked laundry sink) and go ahead with the stages sink.

Since the stages sink hasn't been planned all along, the cabinetry ordered isn't ideal, but it'll work. Sink cabinet 36" and the drainboard would be over a 24" 4 stack of drawers. I would switch my mental designations of the space. (I have island for prep and the area left of the sink for baking) I'm not sure how it switches storage around - I wanted those drawers for baking stuff, but I can't switch the cabs around. Sizing isn't interchangeable.

I have a double trash across the aisle in the island. I do want the trash in the island though. I am constantly sweeping crumbs into the trash.

Would you double up trash & put one under the sink as well? I'd rather have the storage space, but will I miss having trash RIGHT THERE in the midst of the prepping space?

Single faucet? Double faucet? I'm already stretching for the stages sink, so I KNOW I can't justify 2 Karbon faucets. I love the functionality of the karbon -- but like the idea of 2 people working... concurrent prep and clean up, kid #1 hand wash and kid#2 rinse and loading dw... My kitchen is transitional/traditional. Hardware is a mix of cup pulls and amerock revitalize. Oil rubbed bronze.

Would you choose 1 traditional pull out? 1 Karbon? or 2 traditional pull outs?

Or just put it all to bed and be happy with my silgranit single (& I am), and sorrowfully say goodbye to the drainboard idea... We can certainly just buy a cheap utility sink for the mudroom to replace the cracked one...

ugh. I thought I was done with all the decisions... Demo in 2 weeks.

I know I wouldn't be happy with trash, etc across from my sink. We have curbside recycling and compost. So I need to rinse a lot of things before they get chucked in the recycle bin. And I'm really looking forward to a better arrangement to increase my composting. But maybe you don't have recycling so you aren't rinsing things? And maybe you use the garbage disposal for vegetable scraps and such? I think it might depend some on your kitchen habits.

I'm getting the stages 45 and I am going with two faucets. The ability to have people wash their hands or get a drink without disrupting my work is a major motivator for me in choosing this sink. Two karbons was out of budget for me. So I'm going with two less expensive pull out faucets.

we have recycling... but they let us be lazy. No sorting. No rinsing. And with 4 kids in the house, I get tons of paper recycling from school, so standing at the island sorting it is helpful. I suppose if I really don't like having a trash there, I can always not use the non-drain side for even more trash instead of storage. I did try to see if I could swap my 18" dbl trash for my 24" 4 drawer... but it just doesn't work.

Hi Ainelane, since the Stages comes with the bottom rack , and it is undermounted, I don't think that my pots have ever hit the metal. I just went and knocked on the metal and it sounds like a good solid metal, much different than my cheapie sink in m basement kitchenette.I don't see any insulation when I look from below. Curious, I looked it up the Stages listing and they are touting "SilentShield sound-absorption technology offers quieter performance", I honestly have no idea what that means other than that it seems to be on a lot of the Kohler sinks. Perhaps they have engineered something into the metal design? The inside deeper part measures 31 inches across. It is 9.5 inches deep and with the undermount it is deep enough that there is very little outside splashing when cleaning pots and pans. I LOVE my peninsula sink for all the reasons you mentioned. The two matching pull down faucets are like the Chinese lions that flank the front doors in China, they seem to stand at attention in the sight line. When I have company, I put the small drainer into the sink and pull out the heavy Kohler cutting board over it . Although too heavy to be regularly used, that board is a thing of beauty and creates more counter space. The white containers can also come out as needed to hold items for a buffet. pinkpanther5, I remember looking for cheaper alternatives and the Ticor 4000 for $400 would give you a similar design for the larger part of the sink (no ledge), but the drain is in the back center of the Ticor and does not allow the large pullout trash that the Stages does with its off-center drain. I think they are hard to find but they are still out there. That is worth considering if price is an issue, just add one or two integral drainboards to your countertop and you have most of the functions of the Stages sink.

I have the 1 ½ and I love it. The large side fits all of my biggest sheet pans, roasting pans, etc. I've never not had anything fit in the large side. I like to be able to have dirty dishes in one side and have a separate, clean side to use for other things (draining pasta, washing fruits and vegetables, discarding food scraps down the disposal, etc). I have also been using a nifty roll up drying rack (as suggested by romy!) which lays across the large bowl so as to not take up any counter space, gives me access to the large bowl underneath since it only goes halfway across, leaves me the small sink for other tasks, AND rolls up and stores neatly under the sink when not in use! (photo from Bed, Bath, & Beyond...not my sink)

I completely understand. I never would have paid that much for a sink either. I ordered a blanco super single. The plumber provided a double sink to the counter fabricator instead. They looked all over to find me a single sink that would fit the hole cut for a double. We initially tried Kohler strive which seemed basically same sink but center drain. It didn't work but the 8 degree did. I didn't pay the difference since it was their fault and the alternative was to get a new slab of granite. I would never have spent so much on a sink before, but now I've had it honestly I would sacrifice something else bc I love it that much. It works really well for our family, and I use it many times a day so I really appreciate it. Good luck, I also had no idea it was so hard to find a single sink not to mention around here it is not common so the plumber, contractor and counter guys all thought I was crazy for insisting on a single instead of just taking the double that fit the hole they cut.

We've gone without a disposal for 5 years, and I did miss it at first, but since I grew up without one, it wasn't really hard to get used to not having one. I probably will not get the fancy composter, though planning for a dog dish or similar option is probably important. I don't have a good system right now, and that is something I'd like to change. I like how the dog dish is distinctive from regular metal bowls enough to have a specific job, and they are nice and weighted, too. I assume you CAN have a stages or prolific sink without a disposal. It is just in watching the videos that describe the design and how they are meant to be used, the use assumes you have one. For instance, the design around the drain of the Prolific is specifically meant to funnel waste to your garbage disposal. I figure that I am paying for that function, a function that not only do I not need but could potentially make it harder for me without one. Maybe not since I tend to do that with the strainer in place anyway so I can then empty it into the garbage. It is an awesome sink! There are just a lot of little reasons I think I'll be happy with a thoughtfully planned single basin and cobbled after market accessories. The video is certainly inspirational. The part I think will be most missed by not getting it for my household is having the racks put the pot you are cleaning at optimal height!

The trash would be just across an aisle from the sink? Our kitchen has that, and its no big deal. If it bothers you, you van always add thr second trash can after you get into the kitchen. So I would leave the option for the under sink to storage or trash, as the kitchen proves to work best.
