My sad Coelogyne story with a happy ending!
Comments (13)Nice clone and good growing. This orchid has a reputation for being a bit difficult to flower and being difficult to re-grow after you chop up a large flowering plant. I haven't got one, but you often see large plants in hanging baskets at shows around these parts. Carol is right, it must like it cooler at least in winter because it is grown under Den. nobile conditions. Do not know how much of this cool down is necessary to induce flowering. A hybrid. Coel. Unchained Melody (cristata x flaccida) is a beginners orchid here.....See MoreSad ending to meeting a yellow-throated warbler

Comments (7)I stumbled upon your post when I was trying to determine what happened to my 2nd brood, and the post was all too familiar. We've had successful broods for 5 years until this round. I did notice that the female nested several weeks later in the season than they have in the past few years and I'm wondering if the heat wave has been to blame for this brood's demise. Our female bluebird incubated for almost 3 weeks (I keep daily notes on the cycle), and we were certain that the heat wave was too much for the eggs. On day 19, I was shocked to see that 3 of the 4 eggs had hatched, although only 2 of the birds gaped when I looked in. The next day only one bird was in the box! No sign of the nestlings anywhere on the ground, no sparrows, etc. or signs of misconduct. I suspected that they had died and possibly they had been removed by the female. Does anyone know whether the adult blues will remove dead nestlings? When I checked on him yesterday, he looked rough - listless and unusual. Photo is from day 5 - seems like the nestling would've had more feathers by day 5. Today, day 6, this baby has disappeared from the nest. Tim - I too thought something was funny about this brood, although I never actually saw them dead. I do wonder if the heat had anything to do with the health of these nestlings. Maybe that's what happened to yours, too. Are you located in the south? It is an anomaly and I worry that they won't nest again in our yard. Will look for any other clues as to what might have happened when I clean the box out, but it is indeed a loss - we all get attached to the little guys......See MoreSo so sad
Comments (40)As a medical professional, it continues to frustrate me that we easily do heart transplants - but the treatment of depression is still very challenging. The incidence and prevalence of depression is significant. Many people will experience major clinical depression in their lifetime. Suicide is a complication of depression, just like infection is a complication of a laceration. Some get the complication, others don't. Yet talking about mental illness is so taboo. Depression is impaired brain chemistry - not a personal transgression. Insurance coverage for mental illness is so lacking. Insurance pays generously for for the complications of alcoholism, overeating, and smoking - things people have far more control over. Sorry for my soapbox rant, but in emergency medicine I see so many victims of suicide, both the individual and family & friends left behind. Hopefully his death will bring more attention to the need for better mental health care....See MoreAlisande
