Comments (4)if your doors are frame and panel construction the panel must be allowed to float freely in the frame. It will expand and contract with seasonal humidity changes much more than the frame. You probably want to paint in the dry season when the panel is contracted so that it doesn't then shrink further and show an unpainted stripe. If you seal the panel to the frame the wood *will* move and something will give--you can hope for the paint or caulk bond, but it's also possible that the panel will split. When making new doors it's much better to finish the panel before installing it in the frame, but that's not usually an option in refinishing. Comments (19)We used to have a double oven range like that (small on top, large on bottom) and used the small one all the time. With the amount you cook I imagine you'd use both. but you really have plenty of space so I don't think you need to get rid of the oven stack all together - imagine that your range / cooktop could go on the garage wall where you currently show the ovens next to the pantry. The pantry gets moved to the other wall so that space where the pantry currently is becomes a countertop corner, and you end the run of cabinets with the oven stack next to the door into the school room. This puts a nice run of counter top between 2 stacked elements at either end (fridge and oven stack) which I think would further visually encourage pass-thru traffic to stay on the far side of the island, but would still give you lots of prep area (for baking / oven based items I'd imagine) on the school room side of the cooktop. Basically you'd be almost flipping the positions of the cooktop and ovens (sliding them slightly to the right so they line up with the end of the island.) As for exactly which ovens, I think you've got lots of options - it's just the question of which combination works best for you / your family. From your description it seems like you might be best served with 2 larger ovens. In my Mom's kitchen she has a double oven with the microwave above it and it works out fine although it does put the microwave at a slightly awkward location, though that may work for you if you only rarely use the microwave. If you want the microwave to be lower instead for kid access you could do one oven and a microwave in the oven stack, and then put in a range rather than a cooktop to give you that 2nd oven. This could be a great solution for 2 reasons: (1) allows you to have the primary oven in the oven stack at a comfortable height, (2) gives you a second full size oven for larger items / etc, while allowing that oven to be under the vent hood for cooking items where that is beneficial. And a further option you could consider if you really simultaneously cook a lot of items at different temperatures would be to make the wall oven something like the GE Single/Double - along with the range this would give you 3 ovens of different sizes, with 2 fairly large size ones....See MoreAccepting critiques of my kitchen plan (complete with lego model)

While I wish everyone just loved the plan (especially after I've paid the KD for them and am already meeting the cabinetmaker tomorrow!), it's good to get all the feedback. Better to flush out all these things and be prepared than have a potential problem down the road. Nards, have a lot of thinking to do tonight. mindstorm - The Bluestar will vent up, one 90 degree turn across the ceiling, and straight out the wall. Not as efficient as straight out the wall or straight up, but one turn should be ok, no? What counts as a "veritable highway"? It's 6 feet between the Bluestar and the sink, and I measured it out in steps - turn, 2 steps and I'm at the sink. Is that really dangerous? The windows can't be moved without severely impacting the budget, so there really isn't room on that exterior wall for both the sink and the range. That window on the left is only 23" off the ground, which is way too low for a counter or any appliances. rhome410 - We always move the appliances out from the wall when we move them because I don't like the steam coming up and hitting the upper cabinets. The Kitchenaid might move to the baking counter, and it's possible we'll move some to the Hafele if it's too crowded. I guess I didn't really care about that counter space right next to the fridge and just thought that with the undercabinet lights, there would be enough light? dedtired - No holes yet, but likely by the end of this project! granite-girl - Interesting idea to swap the cabinets next to the range, and at least an idea that doesn't require me to start back at ground zero! The one thing is that the cabinet on the right is a little different in that the door opens on the side facing the doorway so that there's a bigger door and easier to get into. But I'd give that up if it meant for a better flow. growlery - I don't quite understand the bolster - we're planning on a small bolster on top of the chair cushions. There still has to be a solid bench for people to sit on, right? plllog - I just measured that spot when I got home, and it's not big enough even for a cab-depth fridge without changing the window, which isn't an option. I think I could even do without any table for a while - trestle table sounds like it's definitely out. I don't mind the idea of a cafe table, but is a round table with rectangular seating strange? remodelfla - I don't have the sample door yet, but will post when I have them. We're currently planning on 2.25" rails/stiles, but we did also consider 3". Since none of our doors are overly large, I think we might stick with 2.25". Before we decided on a custom cabinetmaker, I saw some samples at KitchenSync of Ultracraft (but with red birch, there's no plywood box option) and Crystal by Quest. lisa_a - I want a commission if they start this! Comments (12)lisacent. I did this layout before you provided your additional info, so I'm not sure how exact this is. A few things to consider. I personally don't have my microwave positioned over my range, so I know that this might be an important feature for you. But if someone told me I could have a pantry for food, if I just agreed to the microwave over the range, I'd do it. So I have put this in the plan for you. Also I gave you corner cabinets. I think you need the space for storage, so I'm utilizing every inch. i have also included a cabinet for trash and recyclables next to your sink and dishwasher. Another thing to consider if you're on a budget is that it's cheaper to get a 36" cabinet from IKEA than a 12" and a 24" cabinet. This plan I sketched needs ALOT of refining and changes, but I hope it will just give you another perspective about your space....See Moreediblekitchen
