Wow! I had a great shopping day!
Comments (7)Here is a day pic of it. I still need to paint the heart. And the light fixture gazing ball. And I bought all this stuff for $3 dollars! There was a sale at the hospital gift shop. We have a really great gift shop in our hospital. I love this forum, because I've started looking at things (junk) differently! You guys have some amazing ideas! I'm slowly working my way through the posts....See MoreI decided to check the goodwill on a whim, and there it was
Comments (16)Cathy, when the girls were small we had a holiday tradition that involved going through their toys every year at Thanksgiving and finding things that were outgrown or unplayed with. The girls then decided which toys were still in good enough condition to go to the local Community Services collection point for distribution. Amanda explained it to Ashley when Ash was about 3, telling her that we needed to share our toys with the "poor babies who didn't have any". Ashley spent years donating her toys to the "poor babies who didn't have any". I didn't think a lot about it until she was about 10 and the big thing was Pokemon cards. She got a Pokeman game for Christmas that utilized those cards in some way, it had been the top request on her Christmas list. When she returned to school after Christmas break she came home the first day and asked if she could give the game away. One of her friends told her that he hadn't gotten Christmas gifts because his Dad was in jail and his Mom had no money. She wanted to give him the game and I heartily agreed. We went shopping for his little brother and sister too and sent a small box, anonymously, with those little gifts and a note from Santa apologizing about the oversight. Her friend still reminds her that she gave him her precious Pokemon game and that it was the only gift he got that year, so the lessons do sink in, even if you think they don't get it. Comments (28)Sorry, no big deals here to chortle over. I can't believe this obsession with name brand clothing, etc. Seems to me that if the maker wants to put his name on a shirt, shoes, etc. that I'll wear (hopefully for years), s/he should sell it to me for half price. I advertise his product every time that I wear it. When s/he tells me that, due to the wonderful cachet of their brand name, exclusivity and all (but they willingly sell it to all comers) I must pay double the price of run-of-the-mill products for it .... I say that's *smart marketing*!! Seems to me that we should just laugh at them and tell them to get lost!! Momma Bird in good old Ohio - we're waiting for you to show us a picture of you modelling your lovely new suit. Kathy - sounds like a good idea to pick up a few of those wonderful desks ... and publicize them on eBay. Good wishes for stretching your dollars ... (I was tempted to add, something like, " ... but not your stories, please" but forebore - I have had no reason to believe that I've seen stories stretched around here. Accusing someone of lying is not exactly a laughing matter, in my book. Though I do enjoy a good laugh, as several of you know - usually of the rather dry kind of humour. Enjoy your summer, sharing good times with loved ones and friends. I just lost a good friend - a hard worker and smart - not yet 60. Lung trouble - he smoked (cigars). ole joyful...See MoreA MOST delicious Goodwill score..I tell ya...
Comments (20)walkin, you're so smart to do the .fr and .de searches too...I should have thought of the .fr at least, since that's his home country. So no, *you're* the inveterate researcher! (to be said like "*you're* the shmoopy" :)) I'll come do your backsplash just as soon as I'm finished with this one, which is going to be sometime in 2010 at this rate...I've had to suspend work on it until we finish the darn house--I can't even get to the table where the panel is at this point, the room is so full of painting supplies! But thanks for the kind words about it. Did you see the larger-rock column (I added another of it on DH's side of the sink too, but running horizontally, just for symmetry's sake) in the master bath? :) Amy, *ha* about the rug -- I noticed that too! DH now calls them "The Colors of Goodwill" LOL. Trying to figure out how to work that rug into the living room...(we have to pull the carpet and put hw down in there first--another waiting project) I'll follow your excellent suggestions re research, too -- thanks. This is the same GW where I found the Zarina piece, btw -- it's by far the best one in the area -- there is a small enclave of pretty cool houses nearby that were built in the 60s/early 70s (including many Rummers) and I keep thinking it's from the estates of folks there, maybe? I also found some postwar Italian glass/ceramic, some mid-century Oregon ceramic plates (beyond cool -- I should post those too -- I'm going to put them up on the wall), and some Blenko there yesterday as well. Someone's survivors just didn't appreciate their parents' taste... Thanks Daisy :) And Reno, it was funny -- when I lifted the painting up (I was almost afraid to because it's so obviously not G'will kind of merchandise) so the cashier could see the price tag, he smugly joked "oh, you found a Monet!" as in "all g'will art is cr*p." I laughed along with him and said "Yeah...well, the frame's pretty beat up, but I like the colors" LOL...(I wonder if there's a way to restore a frame -- it's so gorgeous I don't want to lose it, but it's been dented and bruised in a few places...or maybe those should be proud battle scars?) I'll check those places too, lynn -- I didn't know about Artcyclopedia.com--thanks. Just for fun, here's the one place where Amy saw the boat painting, with the only bit of info I've been able to find out so far: Here is a link that might be useful: the boat painting is so different, but the signature is the same...See MoreLavender Lass
