My DD made a score like that at a thrift shop . . . saw a painting for $50, went home and researched it and found out it's worth maybe $8000. She hustled back next morning and happily plunked down $50. She's keeping it for the time being . . .

Oh my, Fly, that is wonderful! I can only find a tiny bit of info, but the one painting Google turns up is that of a boatyard, subject matter near and dear to my heart. Can't wait to see it!

(hostagrams, I'm amazed that the painting was still there when she went back -- usually if I do that, don't buy it immediately, somehow the energy I've put on it attracts someone else, even if it's sat there for years, and it's gone by the time I return. Never fails, actually...)

Thanks, y'all :) Yes, Les, it's so up my alley -- I love 20th c. art/design, as you may remember. With very vertical orientation (DH said that reminded him of Asian landscapes--e.g. Japanese, Chinese--in which perspective is rendered vertically), the big cedar (which is a tree I absolutely love -- if it's not a cedar, I'm deciding it is one until someone tells me it's not :) and the cliffs and faraway ocean, I wonder if it's a stylized northwestern landscape -- the bio at the one website that has information about him states that he moved to the US and started doing landscapes and architecture later in his life. This painting seems to fit with that part.

There is so *much* paint on it -- I wonder if at some places the top layer has flaked off -- or if it was meant that way...we can't tell for sure. I hope the gallery that is displaying the boat scene Amy mentioned writes me back with any kind of lead to learn more about this person.

Bee-you-ti-ful. I also immediately noticed and appreciated the vertical orientation of the landscape. Refreshing. Looks great with the rug, too! Nice to see the repetition of pattern and color there. Will they go in the same room?

If you can find out where he settled here in the US, a larger gallery in that area might be able to tell you more. Writing to the town where he was born might also yield more info. The French are tremendous keepers of that kind of information.

Not only is it a great piece on its own right but has all my favorite colors, to boot!

I'll come do your backsplash just as soon as I'm finished with this one, which is going to be sometime in 2010 at this rate...I've had to suspend work on it until we finish the darn house--I can't even get to the table where the panel is at this point, the room is so full of painting supplies! But thanks for the kind words about it. Did you see the larger-rock column (I added another of it on DH's side of the sink too, but running horizontally, just for symmetry's sake) in the master bath? :)

Amy, *ha* about the rug -- I noticed that too! DH now calls them "The Colors of Goodwill" LOL. Trying to figure out how to work that rug into the living room...(we have to pull the carpet and put hw down in there first--another waiting project) I'll follow your excellent suggestions re research, too -- thanks. This is the same GW where I found the Zarina piece, btw -- it's by far the best one in the area -- there is a small enclave of pretty cool houses nearby that were built in the 60s/early 70s (including many Rummers) and I keep thinking it's from the estates of folks there, maybe? I also found some postwar Italian glass/ceramic, some mid-century Oregon ceramic plates (beyond cool -- I should post those too -- I'm going to put them up on the wall), and some Blenko there yesterday as well. Someone's survivors just didn't appreciate their parents' taste...

Thanks Daisy :) And Reno, it was funny -- when I lifted the painting up (I was almost afraid to because it's so obviously not G'will kind of merchandise) so the cashier could see the price tag, he smugly joked "oh, you found a Monet!" as in "all g'will art is cr*p." I laughed along with him and said "Yeah...well, the frame's pretty beat up, but I like the colors" LOL...(I wonder if there's a way to restore a frame -- it's so gorgeous I don't want to lose it, but it's been dented and bruised in a few places...or maybe those should be proud battle scars?)

OOPS -- parma, I forgot to write what I was thinking about your point about the colors -- anyway, YES, I agree about them! The orangey-reds, the blues, and the spring green, which is my personal favorite color in the world...what were the colors you liked in it?
