Reusing faucets and shower fixtures
Comments (5)I've had to pull and reset old plumbing a few times over the years. Never had a leak after the secondary installation, but it can be a pain to do. Care does need to be taken to not overheat the valve guts when breaking the soldered joints. Depending on what it is, I'll often take the valve apart to protect any o-rings, spindles, any plastic parts, etc. One time I had to reuse everything, but usually I'll get a "valve rebuild kit" from the manufacturer if they are available. Prices can vary, $10 to much higher depending on the mix of plastic/rubber/brass in the kit. Matter of fact last Thursday or Friday I wrote a valve manufacturer asking for guidance about a rebuild kit for a valve that I'm guessing to be around 15 years old, I got an email yesterday that they are sending me one free. Without a doubt, it's easier to use new everything. Breaking the old soldered joints, taking apart old stuff, cleaning the old solder/flux/gunk to get to clean metal...new is definitely easier. But sometimes the old has to be preserved, so you do what you gotta do....See MoreChoosing shower faucets, heads and valves
Comments (10)I had read about the Hansgrohe valve, but I didn't care much for it. Can't understand exactly how I could control temperature, volume and diverter with only 2 handles... We recently installed a new shower with a rainshower head and handheld head, run by one of the Hansgrohe controls. It's very simple to operate. The temperature is controlled by the smaller handle on the outside. I think I've touched it once; after putting it on a temperature both my wife and I apparently find desirable, we never touch it. The larger, inner handle controls volume and diverter. With the Thermobalance II, shown above, you turn the handle left of center to use one shower head, or right to use the other showerhead. Want to be able to use both at the same time (as I did)? For a few more dollars, you get the Thermobalance III valve and trim... This unit could control three different showerheads, or the plumbing can be configured to control two showerheads -- which is what we did, and what I think you're saying you want to do. Turn it left to the for one showerhead, turn all the way to the left and the second showerhead runs; in between, both showerheads run. It's easy to adjust the volume between the two, although I have to say I just go mid-way and let them both run full force. I like the simplicity of having only one control and one handle on the wall. You can certainly configure it with three different handles if you prefer; I just wanted to explain how the Hansgrohe works if you're interested. -- Eric...See MoreGrohe Movario Shower Head - Comments?
Comments (3)I have this-actually 2 of them facing each other in the same shower. One is a handheld on the slide bar and we love it and the other is on the movaria fixed arm and I don't love that. The slide bar is really wonderful and I love the little shelf. The fixed one doesn't really turn side to side or up and down very far and I am probably going to change the arm out but keep the showerhead because it is nice and was too expensive to just throw away. On the fixed, we removed the restrictor, heard lots of complaints about poor water pressure and it made a huge difference. We left the restrictor in the handheld mainly because my kids use that and stay in long wasting water but I have to use the other one to rinse my long hair. I have thought about taking the restrictor out but can't figure out how! I've read lots of complaints about the finishes, we went with chrome and after just 6 months, spots are difficult to wipe off. The adults wipe the shower fixtures dry after every shower but the kids don't always. Still, I think they should look better than they do and had to buy special metal polish to clean the spots. We do have hard water though, but the most the shower went without being wiped down was just overnight and dried the very next morning. In the end, they were pretty expensive and I would probably have chosen something else! Also, forgot to mention that one of the heads has a small drip but have had 2 plumbers out and neither knows how to fix it and found that it is a common complaint. Search on the Terry Love Plumbing board for good recommendations, they are nice there!...See MoreShower Heads, Hand Shower and Shower Faucets
Comments (6)It sounds like you want to have a custom shower system with both a hand shower and a showerhead. This is very do-able. Typically I would recommend you stick with the same brand, mainly because then you know the finish will match perfectly. Especially with finishes in the oil rubbed bronze category, you will find great differences between various manufacturers and it might look strange if the finish is not exactly the same. In the case of chrome finish, you may find there is almost no difference between companies. In that case there is no reason you couldn't have a hand shower made by one company, and a showerhead made by the other. You still need to do some other planning as to how your shower system will be configured. Perhaps this article we wrote about the topic will be of help.
