How many hours of sun does the crimson barberry need to keep its color

I brought 4 of these i 2gallon containers at Lowe's.

I have a south facing house with the driveway on the left (W)

The areas is shaded at times but does get decent sun. How many hours will these barberies need to keep their crimson color?

This invasive species looks its best in "full sun", which horticulturally speaking, means a minimum of 6 hrs. of direct sun per day.

Having grown up with a hedge of these, I wouldn't use several even if they weren't invasive here (which they are.) They are thorny, so no walking barefoot anywhere the twigs might have landed, and they seem to catch an inordinate amount of both trash and oak leaves which need to be removed.

Tamukeyamas can take more sun and heat than most red dissectums. However, most red dissectums seem to do best when protected from hot afternoon sun. The ideal situation for most would be morning and/or midday sun with afternoon shade. I have a Red Dragon and Crimson Queen that keep their color all summer long, one with morning/midday sun, and the other with midday/afternoon sun. My Garnet gets morning/midday sun and loses its red coloration by June. Although I don't have a Tamukeyama, my understanding is that they hold their color better than most red dissectums. So it would probably have deeper coloration with more sun, but would probably retain some of its red color even if shaded.

Hello. Respectfully, So coming from a housekeeper who has worked for 7 years now and is certified , yes it would take 6 to 7 hours, all those people saying it is not going to take that long is inaccurate, I do not clean homes for some the suggestions I am seeing as comments, take those with a grain of salt look at her workflow and then you look at her attention to detail ! And for the person who recommended finding ANY task for her to do so you can spend time with your son and see if she will help, I wouldn't recommend that unless you have told her upfront about any additional tasks upon hire otherwise you wont have a Housekeeper to help you when you move to a larger house in the fall. Clear expectations is key, building that relationship is key. Yes your home is small, but if you also have clutter that has to be moved and dusted, and then sanitized AND disinfected- allows for good quality control to ensure your items stay clean week after week and and they put them back in the appropriate places, you want her to do laundry because you dont feel like it then that is something specifically that needs attention and care depending on how much laundry you have, if you have a certain way you want it put away and giving it the proper time to dry other wise in 5 hours or less in addition to cleaning you will be getting back wrinkled laundry or laundry not washed or dried properly and that will be a problem and she has to figure out where your things are, moving furniture to clean behind them and around them and put them back, and anything else you would like done must be told upfront not after they have begun cleaning it will cause frustration later down the road when you add more tasks on that she may or may not been hired for. Those hours are sufficient because she is a first time Housekeeper in YOUR home unless you personally know her it will take that much time starting out to get your home organized as possible and then the transition for her will be smooth and she will stay longer in the future, especially if you plan on moving to a bigger home, those hours are a good foundation to build from in your next home. They will look at that if the house is larger, I am sure you wouldnt expect less time for let's say a farm house with 3 to 4 bedrooms and a sun porch that needs cleaning or an entire deck or patio that wraps around the house. The size of a house never determines the QUALITY of work you will receive if a person is focusing continuously on the quantity of the homes items. Just some tips to help you. God bless and take care.

Tall fescue will be ok in the shade as long as you keep it cut high (4 inches) so that it can hVe a better chance of absorbing as much sunlight as possible. It won't thrive with just 3-4 hours of sunlight (nothing will) but it will be OK. Don't seed as heavily in those areas to lower the competition for sunlight. The shaded spots in my TTTF lawn are the best performing areas of the lawn due to the shade blocking the heat during the summer. (I'm in the transition zone...) Also think about how shade/sunlight exposure changes during the year...In the fall/winter, the days are shorter so there isn't as much sunlight...but the shadier spots in my lawn end up getting more sunlight in fall/winter/early spring than they do in the summer because the leaves have fallen off the trees. TTTF in the shade is one thing... but TTTF in the shade with poor air circulation is another. Watch out for disease.

Most buffalo grass needs 6 hours of direct sunlight. Filtered sunlight counts as no sunlight. Here's a picture of a different variety of improved buffalo grass growing on the west side of a brick mailbox. Note that it looks awful. The rest of that yard looked great even mowed at 3/4-inch high. Since UC Verde comes as plugs, if the plugs are planted into plug-depth holes, then it should spread and not leave clumps or bumps. The grass above was planted as plugs. Well, shoot. Here's the lawn from the other side of the yard facing the mailbox. That was planted as plugs, so no clumping.

What would you recommend i plant in its place?

i just purchased 5 of them!

I dont believe they are invasive in arkansas.

Spilled Wine Weigela is a nice alternative.

Yes, those little Weigelas seem to be pretty decent plants. TL, one of the things about invasive plants is, there seems to be a latency period, a time where no problem seems to be occurring with invasiveness. Then a few years later, the plant is all over the place. Given Jap. barberry's ease and ability to invade wildlands way up here in WI, I can't help but think it will do so down by you as well.

All that said, lots and lots of folks are still planting barberry. Doesn't make it excusable I suppose, but it's not like you'd be causing the invasion single-handedly! I also agree with NH-these are truly living garbage collectors! And it's absolutely no fun working in and around barberries!

I don't know off the top of my head what zones are in AR. You can add that to your posts by going to "Your Houzz" in the upper right of every page, then "Edit Profile" and under "About Me" add "My zone is 4b-5aNH" with whatever is appropriate filled in for the zone and location information.

What would work as an alternative depends on where you are and what your goal is for these shrubs. Are you making a hedge, or using this as shrubs to give structure in a mixed perennial border, or planting them as isolated specimens, or . . . ? Are you particularly looking for dark-red foliage? I'll give you suggestions that I might use here - you'll need to check out whether they are suitable to your zone and soil and goals. Depending on the space you have available, you might want to see if any of the Physocarpus/Ninebark selections will grow in your area. Many have dark leaves, and P. 'Tiny Wine' is smaller than most types (which make large mounds a bit like forsythia); 'Tiny Wine' is still not a small shrub despite its name which probably refers to the leaf size. There are several kinds of dark-leaved Weigelas as Whaas suggested, and you can check them. They vary in size, how well they tolerate shade, and the quality of coloration of foliage. There are dark-leafed selections of smoke bushes, Cotinus coggygria, which tend to be tall and more upright than the ninebarks. If you have acid soil, PJM rhododendrons have dark slightly reddish-green leaves in warm weather that turn to a lovely mahogany in winter. There is one clematis that I know of with relatively dark foliage, at least early in the season, 'Lime Close' AKA 'Serious Black'.
