OT- How did you find your housekeeper?
Comments (28)LOL Poohpup, I would be on board with that. Anyone who wants to sign up to cook, let me know :) dilly_ny and doc8404 we don't belong to a church. I guess we could call the closest church to us and see if they have any leads or allow job postings... oceangirl67, no it is a Miele. Does this disqualify me from hiring help? Is no one going to want to be my housekeeper now, LOL :( beekeeperswife I found two people who do the chef service and we may still go that route and have them do dinners at least. I just thought it would be nice to have one person who did everything. May not be possible or the best route to get the best food though... linelle, LOL, I've been eating raw cookie dough, brownie batter and cake batter for 20+ years now and I am still alive. I almost always have a bowl of batter or cookie dough in my fridge. My ex used to call it my "bacteria bowl." biochem101 we don't want to eat out. It is not very healthy. We want homecooked meals w/ all organic ingredients. We just don't want to make them! We also don't really have a lot of neighbors. The number of houses in our development is restricted and there are only 4 lots built on and they are large lots on acreage so it's not like just going up and ringing the neighbor's doorbell. We did ask our one neighbor next door who we met and she does her own cleaning. Thanks for the links lazygardens. We would need someone to specifically cook for us, not just a general delivery-of-meals b/c I'm very picky about foods I like and since DF is picky about ingredients and organic. But there are two people we found who customize the menus and come to the house to cook a week, or two weeks or a month worth of food at a time. It seems like that might be a better option but that leaves me to do breakfast (and maybe lunch) every day, which I didn't really want....See MoreHow many hours of sun does the crimson barberry need to keep its color
Comments (6)I don't know off the top of my head what zones are in AR. You can add that to your posts by going to "Your Houzz" in the upper right of every page, then "Edit Profile" and under "About Me" add "My zone is 4b-5aNH" with whatever is appropriate filled in for the zone and location information. What would work as an alternative depends on where you are and what your goal is for these shrubs. Are you making a hedge, or using this as shrubs to give structure in a mixed perennial border, or planting them as isolated specimens, or . . . ? Are you particularly looking for dark-red foliage? I'll give you suggestions that I might use here - you'll need to check out whether they are suitable to your zone and soil and goals. Depending on the space you have available, you might want to see if any of the Physocarpus/Ninebark selections will grow in your area. Many have dark leaves, and P. 'Tiny Wine' is smaller than most types (which make large mounds a bit like forsythia); 'Tiny Wine' is still not a small shrub despite its name which probably refers to the leaf size. There are several kinds of dark-leaved Weigelas as Whaas suggested, and you can check them. They vary in size, how well they tolerate shade, and the quality of coloration of foliage. There are dark-leafed selections of smoke bushes, Cotinus coggygria, which tend to be tall and more upright than the ninebarks. If you have acid soil, PJM rhododendrons have dark slightly reddish-green leaves in warm weather that turn to a lovely mahogany in winter. There is one clematis that I know of with relatively dark foliage, at least early in the season, 'Lime Close' AKA 'Serious Black'....See MoreWeek 78: Extra hour!! How did you spend it?
Comments (17)Hey Pink! We used reclaimed (out of an old church) quarter sawn heart pine (the majority of the house is heart pine). Originally we thought we had enough to do the whole kitchen, then after actually going through all of it- 20 years later- many board feet had missing tongue and groove parts. We considered doing a parquet pattern using smaller pieces, but I changed his mind after we went to Rome and he could see all the marble- the visit finally convinced DH ;^). The wood surround keeps all the marble warm. Compliments the oak table and chairs well too. We are outside of Richmond VA, so heart pine stuff really is all over if you check places pretty frequently. I think from about VA down it is readily available. Hope that helps! Comments (15)In the spring, 24-30 hours. Taking care of the leaves left over from fall is rough. The I completely weed each bed before adding mulch. I often don't finish that until Memorial weekend. One bed in the wild yard didn't even get that treatment. It's been lucky to get water this year. Right now, I probably spend 14-20 hours a week. I once had someone ask what I had to "do" in the garden... wasn't I "done" yet? LOL. I started physical therapy last week, this time for my shoulders. She also asked what I had to do. "You move plants??" I'm very envious of my next door neighbors who have a fabulously perfect yard. They're also 80 years old and were retired before we moved here. I figure I have time to get to that point. Then I can be a full time gardener....See Moremitchdesj
