Anyone else lose a few rose bushes over the winter?
Comments (40)My sympathy to all living in this region of horrific winter, and late freezes this year.I am so sad-I live right on the lakefront in a small ohio community. My second rose bed(5-6 yr old plants) is nearest the brutul winds coming off the lake. .I lost eight roses this year!! My most mature and beautiful rose, About Face included.Had searched for over four years to find "Amelia Earhart"-one died and my fingers crossed for the second..The constant freezing and thawing was soo bad that they were heaved out of the bed!! My more protected bed on the east side of the house lost none out of 14... Only compensation is that I am getting a bit wiser and looking and both own-root, and the roses developed in Canada to replace...I WON"T be caught like this again!!!...See MoreIs my Barbara Bush really Tournament of Roses or something else?
Comments (9)Hmm I don't know, I read TOR was a Grandiflora and I always feel those two are similar in my garden but I always felt like mine was a prolific blooming HT...but after doing a Google image search of TOR mine does look similar but I'm still not sure. Definitely not a floribunda though....See MoreNormal growth on roses, or something else?
Comments (21)Would anyone be open to sharing other examples of basal shoots on their roses, and what the buds (particularly the sepals) look like? The growth on my shrubs indeed seems to be coming from the base of the plants (not growing off another stem--at least for now), but the angular, elongated presentation of stems, leaves, and buds just have this "off" quality to them--but I am likewise a new(er) gardener, so I'm thankful for everyone's comments and input!...See MoreRose I.D. help--PAOK? Comments (17)Robert, PAoK can turn plenty coral, especially if you live in a place with hot and dry summers like here. Mine, which was a big thug, also produced little coral blossoms just as soon as the all summer heat waves hit, and didn't go back to a better size and color until well into fall. I find that Boscobel is so much better in our climate than PAoK was. And Bosco is no small shrimp rose, either, but a large rose that blooms way more than PAoK ever did here. In your climate, you may not have much of a coral problem, though. Diane Boscobel Boscobel...See MoreMaryAnn1950
