Plant or pot?!? My Edmunds Roses came today!

Okay guys what do you think? It's warm and rainy and I'm so temped to just go out there and put them in the ground after I soak 'em! But my brain tells me to wait because it's another crazy Michigan spring with sun and 60s one minute and snow the next...

Maybe I should just pot them up so I can bring them in if it freezes again (which most likely it will) but I really want them in the ground...ugh.

All my other Z5Bers have you planted anything in the ground yet?!?

Eeek! I'm a Michigander too and I'd say pot and wait. I'm not even sure the ground is completely thawed enough to dig yet. And like you said, it's gonna freeze at least once more, lol!

I'm in mid Michigan and have already planted my bare roots because they haven't leafed out yet so won't be harmed by frost. (I mounded them with soil to further protect them.) I have a few bands and body bags (in pots) that have leafed out that I put outside only on warm days but bring inside on cold nights. This method works for me.

Even if there is life in there, that is UNACCEPTABLE. Tell them so and either demand a replacement or refund. Myself, if they will send out a one cane rose (Brown yet) I would get a refund and spend my hard earned rose money elsewhere.

Ingrid, It was like Christmas. Actually, they are my birthday present, and came only a day late for that, so I was very happy to get them. They will be planted in the ground within the next few days, but they are all currently potted and resting in an area with dappled shade/sun. The weather is pretty much perfect, but since I was not quite ready to put them in the ground, I thought they would be more comfortable with a little room to spread out if only for a few days. The heat has been so extreme this year that I had a hard time with some bands I got earlier this summer. Out of desperation, and after losing five (auggh!), I brought five of them into the air-conditioned house and managed to save four of the five. They are really doing well now. I have a couple of tiny bands that came from Heirloom four days ago that are in that same "nursery" now. (There are good lights right over the area where I have them.) Wish me luck since they are really tiny. I got Papa Melliand from Heirloom about three weeks ago, and It looked pitiful at first, but it is looking pretty good now. It also is still in the nursery, and will remain there for at least for a few more days. Yes, I have this problem. No control. When I see or read about a rose on this forum, I often look it up, and usually order it. Vintage quality has impressed me so much, they will get a lot of my business from now on. And I am one happy gardener right now! kay

Lol, to this day LEH still gives me the shudders. She was such a disease magnet, lol! But up in Ohio at least you got indirect sunlight. Bustopher's garden has nice dappled shade/sun so she's not going to have such blotchy yucky colors like mine in the blazing direct Midwest rays. It made her blooms as small as 2.5" across, that is even if they bloomed at all. They were too busy wilting. Would have to keep watering sometimes as much as twice a day. There was a span of 4 weeks that we had merciless heat. You won't ever get as hot as in our locale. But boy do I love looking at Abraham D'Arby! Each time Boxofrox shows his, I start to droooool and my fingers keep twitching each time I look at Crepuscule and wonder what A.D. would look like in its place, lol! Makes it impossible to resist the temptation. But as the Kansas gardener with the 70 roses warned me, do not do the Austins if you are all-organics. And if I killed A.D. I would go as berserk as when I killed my Gemini. Too much heartache! I still also think of the tea I killed, Mrs. B.R. Cant. I loved that tea, a wonderful unique grapefruit fragrance. I had no business growing her. Her canes still had plenty of green until February, then our wildly fluctuating temperatures drove her to her grave (from 80 degrees to 28 degrees within just 5 hours' was the worst for example). Well, this year will be the last year I will grow a rose inappropriate to my climate conditions and to my zone. I have one more poor rose that I'll be torturing but I dare not even mention who she is. When she blooms I'll be called out as the Most Evil Gardener, :-X

The secret's in the sauce. I mean the soil. Anyway, I use Sta-Green's Flower and Vegetable Garden Soil in 2 cu. ft. bags. Lowe's carries it and since I have a Lowe's just 1 1/2 miles from my front door, that's where I do most of my garden shopping. This is how I mix my soil; In my wheel barrow I empty 1/2 bag of soil (1 cu. ft.), throw 3 shovel's full of sand and 1 shovel full of finely ground down dry native soil (red clay). 1 big hand full of leaf's (mostly oak) that I keep from my winter protection Mix it all together good and I've got my planting soil. Nothing fancy but my roses seem to like it. I have roses grafted on to Fortuniana, Dr. Huey, Multiflora plus own root. Everything seems happy. Bet----Thank you for the Barrone and yes, I'll definitely take that seedling of Waterfall off your hands. It'll have a good home here. See you in a couple of weeks.

I haven't received my order yet, the weather is still pretty cold here. I ordered Gruss An Aachen Antique Floribunda rose,Jasmina, Laguna and Pearly Gate. What kind of roses did you order from them?

Pot them up and get really good potting soil. Pro Mix has a growth enhancer in it. I potted up six of the nine roses I got from Palantine and they are going gangbusters in the pot. The ones in the ground have new growth, but not as much. Of course it helps that I was able to take them inside during the freeze last weekend. The ones that were planted I was able to cover and they are fine.

Okay thanks guys, mine are now potted up and in my three sided window area. I will bring them outside when it is over freezing for a few days in a row, lol! I am nervous about potting them up although I don't know why. I did use a good potting soil. I guess only time will tell. I potted up my Palatine roses that came in Nov. 2013, wintered them inside and planted them in the ground in spring 2014 and they are fine but I did have one from that batch that didn't leaf out so was a loss (Philatelie) -- ugh, so nervous about these. In pots I have Neil Diamond, Raspberry Cream Twirl Climber, and Rio Samba. I NEED Neil Diamond to make it, I think I am most excited about that one. :)
