Texas Superstars - Hibiscus

All large plant nurseries, Lowes, HomeDepot, etc dont seem to carry the TX SS hibiscus plants - Flare Hibiscus;Lord Baltimore Hibiscus; Moy Grande Hibiscus

I live in Zone 8, The Woodlands, north of Houston area and have about 6 hours sun in area trying to plant 1-2 of these proven perennials. Trying to get some large hibiscus to last year after year in the garden. Any ideas on hardiest of the plants and where to buy good stock?

I'd recommend going to a good independent nursery, not a big box. You'll have a better selection of unusual plants.

We've ordered seeds and plants online for the same lack of local availability. May have better luck finding at a nursery with a good native plant selection if you broaden the options beyond the TX SS offerings. Most of the selections or hybrids in the hibiscus coccineus, h. moscheutos, h. laevis/militaris set should stand a fairly good chance of working well in much of the state. H. moscheutos in the 'Disco Belle' dwarf line and seed grown h. coccineus have done well for us in Dallas with remarkably little irrigation once established.

Though the article is aging, Chicago Botanic Garden has posted helpful Plant Evaluation Notes for Hibiscus Moscheutos Cultivars and Horticultural Hybrids.

Grandma's Yellow is also known as the found rose Nacogdoches Yellow. I haven't read that they have identified the actual rose which must have been in commerce originally. Any ideas? It was found in Nacogdoches (of course) where it had survived on it's own for a good while and beat out other found roses to be awarded the Texas Superstar award. I owned it last year until it succcumbed to my (unwittingly applied) salty irrigation water. Now that we've shut down the irrigation my roses are sooo much happier. I miss Nacog. and will have to get another. Very floriferous, lovely color.

There are quite a few Texas Star Hibiscus growers on this website. There are usually plenty of seeds to share for those how enjoy starting them from seed. Mine are coming up earlier this year than they usually sprout. Most of my usually do not bloom until July but from the looks of these right now I may be able to enjoy more blooms this summer. I have had them not even start to sprout about May which made me think they were dead. But now I know to just wait and see. The seeds came from one that was well over 10 foot tall but so far where I am living they only have reached 6 foot tall. My Confederate Rose Hibiscus got to over 15 feet tall so I cut it all the way to the ground. But I still have at least 3 more that if left alone will be trees in a couple year.

I went to Fanick's Nursery, and they had tons of them in the back, but they also had the most beautiful perennial phlox, I have ever seen . I bought one, it had hot pink full blooms. I forgot the name but it cost more than the fanick phlox. If you want to get just the fanick phlox, you can get great 4 inch plants at Schumcahers Hill Country Nursery in New Braunfels for $1.50 each. I always have such good luck with their plants, as well as Fanicks. What I like about Fanicks, is they have the really hard to find plants. I loved to go there when John Fanick was alive, he sold his plants for whatever he felt like, nothing was marked, I bought 5 gallon plants for $5 each, he grew everything from cuttings from his own plants, he had greenhouses that he used for his mother plants, and it was great Now they get plants from other growers, and just store them in their greenhouses, and you pay 4 times as much, but they still have the best assortment, and variety. We trim them to the ground in Dallas because they always die back here. They emerge from the roots later than a lot of other things. If dormant, could wait to see if it emerges from stems in your zone.

I found it on Saturday at Maas Nursery in Seabrook. They had the Lord and Lady Baltimore. I had a list of plants (specifically for zone 8) that A&M recommends. I called them and they had all but one of them. It was worth the trip. That is the best place I have found so far and it has variety of plants that will survive in zone 8. I would never have found them if I hadn't asked an employee.

They sometimes do carry them, but the box stores aren't "nurseries". They just flip merchandise, and do not keep a full stock of all things at all times. They might have them when they are in bud-and-bloom for a few weeks until they sell out, or get zeroed-out.
