How much has your Danby Marble countertops scratched?

Still looking for he holy grail of countertops… back on the Danby trail

How much has your Danby Marble scratched? I understand it is much less porous than other marbles (i.e. for staining) and with a MOHs rating of 6 (just under granite) for hardness I would think it should be fairly resistant to scratching but only you Danby owners know because you are living with it in your home

How have you done with the etching and removing the etches?

I don't have any scratching. Last I posted, I said I didn't have any etching. We've had a few sunny days & I do have little etches here & there but I have to hunt for them. Of course, I do have my trusty mats, I'm pretty OCD and we are empty nesters. Is there anyone in your area that has marble? Are you working with a KD who might have a client with marble countertops. Any kitchen companies in the area that have marble countertop displays. They usually have events & the marble has etching.

Scroll down to the bottom of my thread which I updated w/ pictures:

Amanda's large, multiple etches

- lots of scratches, dings, chips.

- big ol' chip at the sink

- we put our glasses on the marble window sills: have scratches at the edge where we ding it/glide the glasses onto the sill

- random scratches that I don't even know what caused it

----

No plans to remove any etches, etc, until I put the house on the market, about 15years from now (if I don't renovate again: argh:what did i say?).

In fact, I think I'm having all these parties/cook so much so that it would patina (all blend in) faster/sooner.

--- like i said the first few etches hurt so so much

but now it's all a dull numbness.

Don't get me wrong, we love wood floors. But 10 years later they look bad...very BAD. I mean it's embarrassing to have people over it's so bad. It just seems a shame to put something in that 10 years later will require my parents to move all the furniture out of their house again so that the floors can be refinished! We definitely like the marble floors with minimal veining - it's way too much for us to have all those gray carrara stripes going in all directions. She actually was thinking we'd have to get the heated flooring. I guess we just need to look for a warmer grayish floor that won't clash with the carrara counters. We also thought of marble floors in the kitchen and wood everywhere else? It's a total open floor plan, though, so we would need nice transitions. Anyone ever used these metal edges you see in the tile stores (link posted below)? I just held the marble tile up to the store display...you have to imagine a matching wood floor on the other side. PS - How do I paste in an actual photo? The instructions/help indicate there is supposed to be a "browse" button on the "preview" step of posting my message. Am I blind? Thank you, tantadoodles. I sealed it with "MB Stone Care MB-4 Stone and More Impregnator/Sealer" which is supposed to last 10 years according to the label. (The owner of the company is a guy named Maurizio, who is pretty much of a stone expert on the internet. He sure knows more than I!) I have to say that since posting my picture, I have further etched the heck out of the island with plain water, tomato juice (wiped up without staining, but left an etch mark), etc. It is going to etch like crazy and I'm not worrying about it. All the marble in our house is etching from plain water droplets, and we have a water-softener and whole house filter! I bought our Danby at Dente Trading Co., Inc. in NJ. they had both honed and polished and the honed was dull and pretty boring. The polishing really brings out the colorful swirls you see in my picture above. Our fabricator (Globe) offered to do a lower polish level for the marble, to more closely match the duller sheen of the perimeter counters, which are Caesarstone Raven. (For those who don't know, the manmade quartz countertops have a less shiny polished finish than regularly polished granite and marble.) Knowing what I know now, I'd still get the same marble, polished. Just know it won't look perfect or brand new for long. Good luck with your decisions, everyone! I have used it on my statuary. It dulls the etch. I have found the green scrubby, dry, does better for me. It still dulls a little, but the etch disappears. DISCLAIMER: This method was recommended for Vermont Danby, not for other types of marble. I decided to try it anyway since I had some large etches. I have honed statuary marble. The marble gets "dull" if you have a spot you work in all the time (I do, so I speak from experience). When I got the etches out with the green scrubby pad, it looks the same as the dull place where I work all the time. I have had my marble for 3 years. I would think in 10-15 years, the whole thing should be dull and worked on - PATINA! Like the other poster above, I also use my island marble for EVERYTHING. I prep on it, serve parties on it, serve my family on it, put the groceries on it when I bring them in the house. It is well used. (Ours is 3x11 by the way.) Not sure what you mean when asking about cost. You mean the cost for comet and green scrubby pads? Maybe $1.50?

Hope we didn’t make a mistake. Stone Source did not have any soaostone we liked. so we went with a honed black granite. I have seen somewhere that citrus might etch them which I was hoping to avoid with soapstone. They are honed on one side and leathered on the other. So, I might have to go with the leathered. I still chose Danby marble for my perimeter cabinets. I think I would like the honed granite better aesthetically to go with honed marble. Any thoughts while I have time?

No scratching, and my etch experience echoes romy's, I have to hunt for teeny etches that no one else would notice. I too am OCD about them, but no one else is. Regarding fixing etches, I don't think you will find a large number of people willing to go that route. Most will hire it out if and when it becomes necessary. I found it a challenge to know if I could do it and I personally found it easy, but I like these types of projects and have past experience. It depends on how DIY/OCD you are. You can do small areas sanding by hand then reapply sealer, or you can use an orbital sander if the entire counter needs done. It requires research and the appropriate products, equipment, and time. I did my experiment because I like to be self sufficient and wanted to know that I could fix whatever came up. I am willing to do that, but don't see that it will be as big an issue as I expected. Also, in my case since my sink is not in marble, that likely impacts less etching and chips.

Personally, I think chipping is the greatest peril.
