Problem: Landscaping budget reduced to 10K
Comments (9)Marie, Interesting thread I think the OP and all those that responded are magnifying how every one of us through out the country and likely through out the world are in a holding pattern waiting to have a better understanding of what our economic future will mean to our individual budgets. I happen to currently be traveling through the Mid-Atlantic trying to get a feel for whether or not the region would be a good fit for a second home. I have spent a lot of time making connections with realtors and looking at properties in three different states. My impression will come as no surprise to you that the American landscape is plastered in for sale signs with empty real estate offices. I should mention that no where have I seen that prices have dropped but the agents clearly stress that the price is negotiable. Unfortunately for me I have discovered that what I was looking for (30 partially cleared rural acres 30-45 minute drive to urban center) is a thing of the past, It appears that all of the larger tracts of land were bought up sub divided and are now filled with empty overly built empty homes (for sale..cheap). To exemplify this yesterday I stopped in Oriental, NC a small beach town on the coast. The streets were not only lined in for sale signs but it was clear that there were more realty offices than a community of that size could (or should) support. The century 21 agent was only able to come up with one property in the county that met my criteria. The price seemed too good to be true but what the heck I was willing to look and please keep in mind that the quality of this land has been repeated through out my trip, ie 30 acres of shear mountain ect. After driving for seven miles past new empty subdivisions I arrive at the property and I was shocked to discover that the entire 30 acres was swamp, I hopped out of the car to snap a few photos for Joe and was SWARMED by mosquitoes. Yikes were people spending so recklessly over the last few years that it didnÂt seem unreasonable someone would buy these extremely undesirable properties? Do I think there will be changes in the nursery industryÂyes indeed and not necessarily for the worse, there have many threads complaining about the vast number of new plant introductions that have been disappointing to say the least and questions about the length/quality of field trials and the new aggressive marketing of a plant. Well tornado warnings are over and I need to hit the road. Hmm.. It is water front maybe I could get use to wearing muck boots and mosquito netting!...See MoreOverall Brand 10K budget
Comments (9)Personally, with the exception of the refrigerator & possibly the DW, I'd go with GE Profile...and to "practice what I preach", I am indeed going with GE Profile for a range w/warming drawer, trivection wall oven, and probably MW with our current remodel. (I'm just starting my research now on DWs.) We have had GE Profile appliances for 12 years and with the exception of the refrigerator we've had absolutely no problems (other than the grease fire I started in the oven when I didn't use the correct size pan for a roast!) In fact, they all still look greatÂwhich is more than I can say for our cabinets! [They look new enough that we will be donating all of our kitchen appliances to our church for a needy family.] However, I will probably never buy a GE refrigerator again...we have had so many problems with the in-door ice dispenser and the ice maker! (We have a GE Profile top freezer w/ice dispenser in the freezer door.) I will say, though, that the rest of the refrigerator works great and has a great functional designÂbut the ice maker/dispenser is a must-have for my DH. We are considering replacing the refrigerator with a Samsung if we can make it fit...it's 38" wide and our KD has only 36" allocated in our design...I will be talking to her about that this week. ++++++ OT....I know, I know, most of you will cringe now that I've said "range" rather than cooktop...but after much research (and considering my DH's preference), I have settled on the GE Profile range...I actually like the look and it offers a warming drawer....something I had originally thought was not in the budget when I was going for cooktop + double oven (tri/conv) + MW. [I don't like the look of the GE Monogram appliances or the cost considering that the Profile and Monogram have almost identical products... the look, price tag, and, in some cases, the warranties are the only meaningful differences.] Now, if I can just convince my husband that the cost of an Advantium is worth it in place of a MW! :-)...See More10K Budget Remodel...Done!
Comments (10)You did an amazing job, beautiful kitchen. You couldn't have posted this at a better time. I am right now priming my kitchen cabinets and getting them ready for paint. Problem is, I haven't picked out a paint color. I went by SW and found Alabaster. I am really leaning towards this color and then you posted. Do you think Alabaster is a bright white or a creamier white? Thanks...See MoreHow much money would you spend?
Comments (35)We will be moving next year and this is a discussion we're having. Like pal and chispa, we'll have a budget--and the price of the home plus necessary improvements has to fit in that budget. Looking at houses on-line, there are some I immediately start adding numbers on--flooring, painting, new kitchen. I'd rather buy a house that needed those things and was priced accordingly, though--especially the kitchen. For selling purposes, keeping this same concept in mind, we'll be repainting most of the house before listing it--Shaker Beige. I don't want people thinking "Oh--I have to paint that." Maybe they'll hate Shaker Beige and prefer a grey, but I figure beige won't keep people from looking at it (the purple/green in one room and deep teal in the other might--which is why we're painting those bedrooms). Our bathroom/kitchen/floor/lighting choices are all very neutral--I hope noone looks at ours and thinks "I'd have to spend $60,000 before I could even move in"...See Morefriedajune
