Hi there!

I have some trouble with my pitcher plant. I got it in November, it looked a little tired then and it just keeps getting worse.

Some pitchers are drying at their tips and some of the jung shoots even develop with dry tips. At the same time the stems of those pitchers seem to be covered with a little moldy looking dust. Other pitchers (the minority) grow well and have no problems at all. All the new pitchers also seem to be growing very skinny, much skinnier then the ones the plant grew before.

I keep the plant on a sunny indoor windowsill. The water is tap water but supposedly my area has water with very low mineral contents, safe enough for carnivorous plants. The grower used that same water. The soil is the minimal soil I got from the grower.

All my sundews and venus flytraps are doing great so I don't think it is a water or sunlight problem.

Sounds like a fungi is attacking your plant (can you upload a pic of the dusty leaves?)

Did you repot it? If so, the rhizome was ok?

I tried to get some pictures of the white stuff but I had wiped most of it off and the stuff that was left did not come out well. Not sure you will see it on here... there is only a small area visible.

I did repot it when I first got it and I have to admit I did not really check the rhizome... I guess that was a beginner's error

If it is a fungus what do you suggest???

Many trees show signs of stress like yours the first year or two after planting. How bad it will be for the tree depends on a lot of factors. If you've had a dry year and didn't water much, that might be part of the problem. Can't really be remedied much now. You can take as good a care of it as you can this fall and hope for the best. Check the recommended forums for advice on how to take care of it.

Good insight Tiffany, thanks, that makes sense. I had this happen recently w/ a special plant, Adenia perrieri, in transit from a Plant Club meeting. The person donating it didn't consider the weather was in the low 30s & I think my plant got chilled on the several blocks I walked to the Subway & then home from there. It's been about a month, am watering carefully hoping it makes it. I love these particular textured leaves, this plant was an early favorite of mine when I started college & had ONE plant. I think this textured leaf is called P caperata (maybe Silver additionally?). Also comes in a bronze, coppery version, quite handsome.

My experience with sequoiadendron and discoloration potentials: 1. cold weather can cause temporary reddening/browning..not sure when this issue first occurred. 2. too much heat and humidity is hard on these and you can get random branch dieback..I think called flagging. 3. cankers due to to condition 2 listed above. Typically you'll have a black spot in the branch with resin oosing. 4. too little water/too much water 5. Too many stresses at once like Ken mentioned. It's a finicky tree but a gorgeous one. I had a baby one that was going great....then 5 years later I gave it fertilizer in the middle of a hot/humid summer and, yeah....Live and you learn.

Can you post a pic of the full plant? The color of the leaf makes me think it needs more light. Is flaccid or hard to the touch?

You could also try the other kinds of water. Perhaps there is something different between yours and the grower's water. Even if you are using the same city or municipality source of water, maybe there is something different at your water pipes.
