Climbing Roses as Shrubs

Hello Everyone!

Recently I've started 'getting into' roses. I've always had a few here and there, but I've become more and more interested in them over the last few years. My question is about climbing roses (preferably old). I've read several posts/articles/blogs that say they can be grown as a climber or a shrub. I thought climbers needed support to get to their height whereas shrubs could stand on their own. Can a climbing rose be turned into a shrub with heavy pruning?

Thanks,

K
