Heat pump or geo for 1843 house in Virginia?
Comments (6)Hi Beth, If you search this forum "geothermal heat pumps" or "Climatemaster" or "Tranquility 27" you should find my thoughts and warnings about the matter. After a year and a half with the new system I still like it, but there are some things to be aware of. (And it occurs to me I might have posted those things on the Renewable Energy for the Home Forum instead of this one, so you might check over there too.) Our 1200 sq. ft. stucco is nowhere the challenge your house is, but our climate may be a little more daunting, except we never get hurricanes in Montana ... :-) Our monthly power bill, including an outrageous $40/month just for gas to heat our water, is $125.00. Our household water useage is about $25/month and we irrigate with a pump, so that's covered under the $125.00. So gas, electric and water, including irrigating, all told cost us about $150/month. We're two people in our late fifties. Do a lot of watering but otherwise pretty modest in our habits. We have an electric range. We keep the house at about 65 F in the winter and won't resort to the heat pump for air conditioning unless it gets too uncomfortable to sleep, and then we'll just use it for a few hours in the evening to take the edge off. That'll probably be for a few weeks in August, but who knows. We're conscientious about opening the house up in the morning to cool it and closing it up when it begins to warm outside. I doubt you have that option, but it works for us. Good luck, Mark...See MorePlease help with quotes: HVAC, Northern Virginia
Comments (9)Thanks Tiger, Harlemhvac electricity is 12 C / kWH (worksheet matches bill) Natural Gas is $1.70 / thrm (Carrier worksheet - my actual bill shows is a bit lower $1.3 /thrm) The Carrier worksheet shows breakeven temp for HP as 37F. I did ask about the lineset - R-11 flush is what was recommended. The Carrier person also remarked about the 'more than adequate' and 'good' duct work (they will do some tests - sorry too technical for me - trying to catch up as fast as i can) The Trane quote does include 1 Honeywell media air cleaner and 1 AA700 humidifier thrown in (included in cost). Upstairs with regular filters - was saving me from going to the attic (I guess yearly maint would be time to change filter- so I will get media filters for both zones) The furnace mdl number is indeed TUD.. (just reread the scribble) - thanks Tiger: I did go over some of your numerous posts and saw that you singularly do not like the Trane XL16is and also the Carrier HP would not have the 'electronic demand defrost". I have asked the Trane dealer for the coil mdl numbers. They are a bit backed up as Virgina has a $1500 discount per system (no limit per household) going on- to be redeemed within 30 days of reserving it. Hope to get the mdl numbers tomorrow. Will also be getting three more options from another visit by another dealer today. Will get that tomorrow hopefully. 1 Some combination of Comfort + Infinity 2 All Infinity (so 2nd all Infinity quote) 3 All Lennox system thank you guys for all your posts on this forum (reading a lot since I discovered this yesterday) and helping me specifically...See MoreNeed help with Lawn renovation in Northern Virginia
Comments (154)Hvae you done the shampoo thing? If you are concerned that the dirt is too hard, the surfactants in the shampoo will allow better water absorption. Have you had a soil test? By the way, I doubt anyone is reading this thread because it takes too darn long to scroll to the bottom to see what was said. And no way are they are going to read through the whole saga. I get an email alert that you said something (because I had commented) and I can click to the bottom. But anyone new to the thread would have to scroll down a long time. You might start another thread for future questions and concerns. And then someone other than me might have ideas for you....See MoreEntire Heat Pump System Replacement - Northern VA
Comments (5)Thanks. Excuse my lack of knowledge if I ask a dumb question. Filter: The AprilAire: Air Purifier 2210 Thermostat: Honeywell RTH9580WF Wi-Fi Touchscreen Humidifier: This is basically the same setup we currently have. It looks like you are recommending the larger air handler (same version but larger tonage), correct? Can I ask why. We already have extremely loud ducts (current air handler is 3.5 Ton Unit Model - Variable Speed: Trane 4TEE3F49A1000AA). When the last system was installed we were finishing the basement which was previously unfinished and at that time they recommended a larger system and added some duct runs for the basement. Since then the short run ducts leading to the first floor seem extremely loud. You can even hear when the system turns on in the up stairs bedrooms. The house was built in 1977. Note the current 14 yo Heat Pump is a Trane XL14i model number 4TWX4042A1000A. Would you recommend the going with the current XL16i model instead of the XR model. The heat pump is located next to the house and close by 2 large oak trees. I like the idea that the XLi has a hard top to prevent debris from getting into the heat pump, but it's more expensive. How much does that matter?...See Morejbedford004
