How to uninstall Avast From my laptop

I will be removing Avast from my laptop windows 7 computer next month and I want to make sure I get everything removed before installing another antivirus program.

go to control panel uninstall programs when list shows up look for Avast right click on it then click uninstall.

Uninstall our software using avastclear

Sometimes it's not possible to uninstall Avast the standard way
- using the ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS in control panel. In this case, you can
use our uninstallation utility avastclear.
1. Download avastclear.exe on your desktop
2. Start Windows in Safe Mode
3. Open (execute) the uninstall utility
4. If you installed Avast in a different folder than the default, browse for it. (Note: Be careful! The content of any folder you choose will be deleted!)
5. Click REMOVE
6. Restart your computer

Thanks for the replies. Yes, Raven I want to avoid using the Norton trial and get Avast on the new laptop before I go online. I re-downloaded Avast again, to a flashdrive using my XP machine. I was able to move it onto the Vista hard drive Downloads folder. But as before, it would not install. First window shows the default language - english. Next window - There was an error while completing the setup process. View setup log. I googled the main error line from the setup log, didn't find my exact problem, but found a few posts - all Avast related and also relating to various internet connections. So maybe once I get my wireless router hooked up tomorrow (cross fingers) this will install. I don't understand why that would matter, but what do I know! My XP computer is ATT DSL wired, which I am making wireless since I now have the laptop. That in itself is/will be a real learning experience. And I will definitely check out some of the tutorials. I think I will like Vista, just feeling a little inept at the moment.

on several occasions in the removal of McAfee it will not allow you to do the removal from add remove because it says it is running, the best thing to do before even beginning is to go to msconfig and disable all McAfee entries in the start up menu, reboot, it will then pop up saying changes have been made just tell it not to tell you that again, then go to add remove and follow the steps in that above link to get rid of it. I also would then after following all those steps reboot and go to programs files and if you find any thing there McAfee related delete it all.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!! Your advice worked and my computer is almost back to normal. Goldie: that was my first thought, too (LOL)! Mary Lu, it wasn't you at all; just me trying to do too much :~) I basically just followed Camp56 and Ideefixe's instructions and it worked! I can't thank you both enough for taking the time to walk me through it!! Rose: the thumb drive idea is a good one for future problems. I never would have thought of that. Thanks! Olychick: you know, I'm embarrassed to say that I had no idea about that Restore feature. In the past, whenever I've had a problem DH has fixed it for me. I need to be more proactive. Allison: thanks for those recommendations. WIP: yes, they use a small outside IT firm; nobody in-house except DH. I was going to call them next if I couldn't find a solution here. Oakley: you're kidding?!? I made a mistake earlier saying that I deleted Norton, it was MacAffee, which I've had for quite a while. It ran every day, scanning for problems but never found a one . . . and I KNEW something was wrong before all of this. That's why I was looking for anti-virus programs. Hmmmmm. Graywings: Thanks! I'd forgotten that GW even had a computer forum and had never checked it out. But, I will definitely keep it on mind for future problems. Chickadee: Haha . . . that's for sure! try using this program to uninstall it then install your proper version of MSE (be sure you get the one for your version of windows) free AppRemover utility since it is an xp computer you will need to be sure you do not get the 64 bit option. Security Essentials 4.2.223 XP Please check to make sure he is able to get windows updates and also he is able to create restore points. There is an infection we have seen that causes you not to be able to and it also disables the antivirus so just want to make sure. I would also install and run the free malwarebytes and run a full scan just to be sure. It is a program I think everyone should have on their pc, update an run the scan every couple of weeks. I just remove it from the add and remove programs. It pulls up the Avast software to remove it. I have never had a problem removing anything that way.

Removing through Add/Remove is OK. Now a days the use of the manufacturer's dedicated removal tool is recognized as more thorough. User's choice.

Add/Remove does not always remove all and even a small file left over sometimes will not allow your new AV to function properly. Do as DA & azinoh state above.

Emma,

If you have CCleaner installed on your system run the registry utility. It would not be unusual to find some orphan entries reported. To remove them, or anything else, using CC is your decision. If you decide to be sure to utilize the offered back up.
