downloading avast CD to vista laptop

Just got a new laptop that runs Vista Home Premium. I am trying to download the avast.exe file that I burned on my XP computer to a CD. I don't know my way around Vista menus at all, so maybe I'm not doing this right, but I can't get it to install. Could someone please tell me how to go about doing this? I find the CD drive in the My Computer area, doubleclick, etc and get about 2 windows later, then has a brief error. So don't know if there is some incompatibility here? I just need the exe file on the CD right? Or am I going thru the wrong menus? Thanks.

Why do that and not just go on line and download it again

I have Vista Home Premium also. But not avast. This is how my laptop downloads from cd.. I go to desktop. Insert cd and it opens. Just follow directions given. Not sure if this will help. But, at least a try.
Also, You should have a Welcome Center. If you do not see it in start up menu, type welcome center into your start up menu search engine at the bottom of the start up screen. It will find it for you. Then go there! Excellent info to know about your windows and computer. You can also google Windows Vista Home Premium Tutorials. See what you get. You can also google "Avast Compatibility with Windows Vista" to see if it is compatible. I'm not sure.
I like Vista, don't be afraid to ask any questions. It is input for my learning experiences.
Please stand by for a more professional opinion. I'm a nivce at this, myself!

That is the one thing I have noticed since scouring the net and asking everyone and anyone in the know their opinions on who makes the most well put together laptop. It seems that many folks are extreemely loyal to one particular product or brandname, but one brandname doesn't seem to be conclusive over the other. The Imac sure has its very loyal following, as well as Dell and Toshiba and, another brand rapidly picking up steem is HP, especially their DV6000 and DV9000 lines. I am beginning to conclude that at this point, figure out exactly how much of a laptop you need and can afford, paying particular attention to Size of Hard Drive, How much Memory (RAM), and third, how much graphics card, and lastly and most important, the CPU. I have concluded that the duel core processor is important, as it is essentially two processors stapped together, and the OS uses one for certain functions and the other for certain functions, and most importantly, only one is being used and powered when both are not needed, saving battery power and overall electric consumption. Another rule of thumb, to save money, get the base core duo (1.60GHz, I believe), and skip the upgrade on the CPU and get 2G's of RAM, as your CPU runs out of cache space for storage, it will draw from Ram, and adding RAM is much cheaper than adding a high end CPU. Bottom line, I'm waiting for some hot sales. Another thing to think about is size, and yeah, folks, size does matter... Most of the 17" models that I've tried out in the stores just seem too damn big and heavy, especially if your going to use the thing as a LAP top... it's just too damn big for my lap, and I have a big lap at that... the 12" is just too small, especialy for viewing movies, etc. That's the one thing that turned me off from the DELL XPS 1200... hot looking little machine... just too small. 14-15" seems just right for my taste. It seems to me that all these machines (Toshiba, Dell, HP and many others) are all beginning to become clones of one another. Seems they are are made in China nowadays, and no one has yet to convince me overwhelmingly that one is better than the other...

albert- If your wife used Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel, it has removed most, but not all, of McAfee. (If she did something else, like only deleted the shortcut for McAfee, it's still there). You can go to the link posted above for the McAfee Uninstaller, download it, and run it to remove everything. I believe it works even if you have already done a partial removal, but not sure. At any rate it won't screw anything up to try it. Also, I've never seen McAfee automatically bill for a subsciption renewal without your consent. I suspect one of you clicked on a button somewhere - like in an email to you from McAfee, or in an update notice as the program approached the anniversary date - and that you agreed to renew your subscription, and probably had to enter your credit card info for the subscription. Lastly, reassure me that you are running some other kind of antivirus software on your computer.

Sounds like a lot of laptop for the money. Max it out in ram for graphic processing and burning. Bit big and heavy for frequently caring around though. Nothing burns fast on a laptop. Intergrated Graphics cards arent the fastest thing in the world. Nothing wrong with AMD processors, as long as its a mobile processor it wont cook your lap.

First I have to confess that I have not gotten to backing up the hard drive - or working on the start up programs. Other computer issues in the family took priority - and then we had non-technological family difficulties. So my focus has been elsewhere. The internet connection still sometimes drops. Less often but it happens. I can just buy a wireless dongle. The laptop had been running cooler after getting all the bogus programs off. But lately it's sluggish again and running hot. The hard drive is making a bad noise. Not sure how to describe it but kind of like a car struggling to turn over. It does it just occasionally - some times if it's just trying to perform some action - and just now when I started the laptop. (It has not made the sound since it started up). Since hard drives are mechanical, does this sound like the hard drive might be failing? if it's hardware failure, is there any point in running chkdsk? or any other test? If the hard drive is failing, could that be causing it to run hot and slow at times? seems logical to me but I have no idea. I could inexpensively replace the hard drive. And get a wireless dongle. I imagine all that could be done for under $100 and just a small amount of time. The other troubleshooting I did was partly to learn. Here's what I like about the computer and why I may want to save/keep it: great size - 13", light - but has a great, great keyboard for such a small laptop. like the trackball and no touchpad. includes a free upgrade to Vista (so it could be used after XP is not supported) What I don't like: ongoing wireless adapter problems, sometimes running hot, possible failing hard drive, no web cam. Not sure if I'll put it to sleep soon - or try to resuscitate it. If I decide to let it die a peaceful death, there's no need to back up the HD. If I decide to replace the hard drive (if it needs it) or keep it if the HD's fine, I will back it up and make that a priority. And of course, now that I'm writing this post, it's behaving absolutely fine. Quick, cool, no noise. Thanks. Lynn.

I assume you are trying to keep from going online with the Vista machine till you have an antivirus installed on it?
I would use the xp machine and go ahead and download the latest version of Avast again and then save that one to disc or flash drive and then move it to your hard drive on the Vista pc, you will need to move it off of the cd or flash drive onto the actual hard drive. It should work find that is how I have done it in the past using a flash drive. You will then of course have to do the registration for that new Avast so it does not expire.

Is it the setup file that you are attempting to put on your new computer? When you refer to AVAST.exe I am confused. Sounds as if you are actually trying to move the program file rather than the setup, and I don't know whether you can do that or not.

Thanks for the replies. Yes, Raven I want to avoid using the Norton trial and get Avast on the new laptop before I go online. I re-downloaded Avast again, to a flashdrive using my XP machine. I was able to move it onto the Vista hard drive Downloads folder. But as before, it would not install. First window shows the default language - english. Next window - There was an error while completing the setup process. View setup log.

I googled the main error line from the setup log, didn't find my exact problem, but found a few posts - all Avast related and also relating to various internet connections. So maybe once I get my wireless router hooked up tomorrow (cross fingers) this will install. I don't understand why that would matter, but what do I know! My XP computer is ATT DSL wired, which I am making wireless since I now have the laptop. That in itself is/will be a real learning experience.

And I will definitely check out some of the tutorials. I think I will like Vista, just feeling a little inept at the moment.

have you turned off any other of the protection on your vista pc that might interfere with AVAST? I would try to do it in safe mode that might be the best way to go about it.

I had no problem at all doing it on mine but I was putting it on xp pro not vista and I had all other security related programs disabled and was not connected to the web.
I know vista does come with certain other security programs that might be the interference.
Try vista safe mode and see if it works that way.

Not while in safemode, but earlier turned off the Firewall to see if that would make a difference. Didn't. I'll have a fresh brain tomorrow.

Avast download comes a couple different ways... one way is a 18mb online initial installer that goes online and actually downloads the program for your vista... or another program for xp .... it depends on what that initial installer determines your opperating systems is and needs so it knows to give you the right program.
If thats your download rather than the 300mb full install progam .. you have to be connected to the internet for it to work.

You might want to consider downloading the Norton Removal Tool for that version and unistall your trial version before installing Avast.

Long story short, I removed the Norton trial package off, and put on plain Norton AV (on sale). I had used it in past years with no problems. When this expires in a year I'll check back with Avast. Good news is, setting up the wireless for both computers went flawlessly, so I'm happy. Thanks all for your ideas.
