de, I don't think you should be having so much trouble keeping your soil moist overnight. I'm wondering if you moistened the mix (specifically the peat) when you combined the ingredients. The peat can be problematic. Personally, I just put a small hole in the bag, and put the hose into it for a while to moisten the peat (let it sit a day or more afterwards) before I add it to the mix. If you didn't moisten the peat before you put your seeds in, chances are that the mix is just very dry (and dry peat will allow the water to flow through, rather than be absorbed). If that is the case, you will need to give your mix a LOT of water, slowly so as to not wash out your seeds. But, at the same time, you may not have success anyway, if the mix isn't moist anyway.

I didn't learn much new yesterday--but was very upset by the way the doctor presented information to me. I'm not ignorant and I've done some research--what I wanted was ways to cope with where we are now and suggestions on preparing for future changes and how best to help DH. What I got was a whispered "doom and gloom" dialoge which excluded my DH almost completely. Looking back, I should have stopped her asked for our copies of the papers and gone home and waited to discuss them with his regular doctor. On top of that, the paperwork was obviously a form already on her computer and used for other patients because one section says "her" repeatedly because she obviously forgot to change that part to "him". I guess I am naive to expect paperwork specifically prepared for DH. I hope the test results will be helpful to our doctor in some way, but right now I feel like they were a waste of our time! Oops! Sorry--guess I just needed to vent. I am learning as I go, but I now realize that my job is to care for and protect my DH in every way I can----even if it is from rude, inconsiderate specialists! Enough said--on with the fun decorating that I love. We'd better hurry, Valentine's will soon be here! Hey, no fair! Don't kick me out of the party!! I like to throw a party!! Let me explain the tater tot deal! Ya'll will understand. See...a tater tot likes to roll. Yes? So I was taking some out of the oven and one rolled right off into the oven. Well at that point the oven was still hot, so I couldn't go digging around for the lost TT. "I'll get that later" I say to myself. So 'later' I forget all about that lonely TT at the bottom of the oven...poor thing. I do remember it shortly after I turn the oven back on a few days later to cook again. And again, the oven is too hot to dig for the TT. On the 2nd time the oven was turned on to heat, the poor TT was so charred and black that I guess it'd had enough and to put itself out of it's misery, finally burst into flames. "UH, DH! I need your help!" (seconds go by) "UH DH!! NOW, there's a FIRE in the oven!!!!!" (that gets him moving!!) He fishes it out of the hot oven! There! That's done! As for kicking me out of the party...NO FAIR!! I guess I've just had a lot going on...last night I was cooking dinner, step-daughter breezed through on her work break to grab the hot dogs she'd asked me to put on for her, and I was also helping DH in packing for our trip... Multi-tasking, yes...Usually without side effects! (oh, and DSD neglected to turn the hot dog pot off after removing her dogs...so it's not just me!)

there is a plant propogation book i have wherein the author describes his own mist system. that author has a large black coil of hose in the roof of his greenhouse so that water can be heated before reaching the mist nozzles. that's at least one vote for using warm water and keeping the cuttings reasonably warm as they root. just thought i would toss that in! lol. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Posted by: mosaic z8 LA (My Page) on Sun, May 11, 03 at 11:59 With such a setup you could probably root roses under mist all winter here in Louisiana. I bought this particular timer though because when I looked at it my mind said "Ah! Mist!" (heh), even though the reason I bought it at the time was to keep a new patch of zoysia sod watered until it rooted in. My batteries did last all season last year, but it was only opening that valve 4x a day for 3 weeks, and then 1x every 4 days for a couple of months. And even though I had a pressure regulator on there, I kept having a problem with the heads blowing off! (Their drippers work perfectly by the way so it's nothing against the company) I ordered foggers from Misty Mate this year and they put out a super fine fog. Perfect for propagation. They are a litte more expensive than the ones from Dripworks but worth it. And if you ask they will ship the misting heads for $1.50. I went to HD and bought a 10-24 tap and drill set (3.00) and drilled holes in my 1/2" cvpvc and the heads just screwed right in! I bought a Melnor timer at HD for $39 and it has 1 minute spray options so I've got it set for 1 minute every 10 minutes. Can't remember the model number but it's not the one on the HD website. I hope to finish my new propagation box soon. I built one on a stand this year so I can move it around easily. Wouldn't you know, HD has plastic sheeting made just for greenhouses that I used! It's not the real thick heavy stuff either. It's only 4mil and is crystal clear see-thru! Hopefully I'll be finished this week!
